John Wick 3 is basically a chase movie. In John Wick 1 & 2, retired assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) pissed off an international crime organization called The High Table and now Wick is declared “excommunicado” (which means anyone who helps Wick is put under a Death Sentence, too). Wick has a $15 million bounty on his head and plenty of people want to collect it. The movie moves from one fight scene to another. There’s a lot of choreographed violence.
My favorite sequence occurs when Wick calls in a favor from Sofia (Halle Berry) and all hell breaks loose. There’s some creative use of dogs in the battle scene. Director Chad Stahelski doesn’t tamper with his formula of ultra violent action (I sort of wish he would!). The AMC theater where I saw John Wick 3 was sold out. The crowd was raucous! And the film sets up John Wick 4 nicely. GRADE: B+
Jackie already has it on our schedule for 1 pm on Monday!
Hey, they never should have killed his dog. Everything that has happened since is on them.
Jeff, the movie reviewer in THE Wall Street JOURNAL, Joe Morgenstern, loved JOHN WICK 3. And he’s a dog guy, too!
Going on Tuesday. $4 and free popcorn.
Steve, $4 and free popcorn and JOHN WICK 3 sounds like a perfect day at the movies!
I really enjoyed the first John Wick movie since, in addition to all the action, it had a discernible plot. The second one dispensed with plot for wall to wall action, and it was pretty boring. I’m afraid the third one is going to be more of the same. I’ll still probably see it, but I can wait until it’s on DVD.
Michael, I’m with you on the tediousness of wall to wall fight scenes. Yes, they’re entertaining at first, but how many ways are there to dispatch a Bad Guy? I’m hoping more plot is a part of JOHN WICK 4.
I see you feature the soundtrack. Is the original score music that good?
Rick, I like the music in JOHN WICK 3 but the focus in these movies is on the action.
Hope you all enjoy the movie!
Though I have to admit that I’ve never been interested in action movies at all.
Wolf, action movies and superhero movies seem to be the most popular genres with American audiences right now. But, I confess, I have ZERO interest in the new Godzilla movie.
I am so tired of remake after remake of Spiderman too.
I must admit, John Wick 3 did have a little “diminishing returns” feel to it, but the guest stars – Anjelica Huston and especially Halle Berry – helped keep the attention through the endless fight scenes. The last section, however, the fight with the Chinese guys in the Continental, was just tedious after a while, and I dislike Asia Kate Dillon’s snark. But I will definitely be ready for #4.
Jeff, if the JOHN WICK producers are smart, they’ll add more story to the next movie…and shorter fight scenes.
