Scott Porter is a Florida private investigator who is in love with his married secretary, Trudy (but more about that later). A potential client brings Porter a mysterious note and a rare first edition of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue. It doesn’t take long before the bodies start piling up. Organized crime, the FBI, sudden violence, and a complex love affair fuel this non-stop thriller. If you’re in the mode for a fast-paced mystery, Mad Dog Barked will take you on wild ride.
Rick Ollerman is scheduled to attend BOUCHERCON in New Orleans in a couple weeks. He’s a good example of writing noir in STARK HOUSE mode. I reviewed his 2015 mystery, Truth Always Kills here. GRADE: B
George, I like any fast-paced fiction. I try and read at least one every month.
Prashant, you’d enjoy MAD DOG BARKED. I’m a fan of action-fiction, too!
love the premise, a rare mystery first edition. the dream of every collector. I’m getting caught up on my reading, so may give it a try.
Maggie, you can’t go wrong with a Rick Ollerman thriller!
I’ve been meaning to read him ever since the last one. Maybe this time.
Jeff, there will be plenty of copies of MAD DOG BARKED at BOUCHERCON! And the author will be signing them!
Hey, George,
I notice you tend to give higher grades to non-fiction books. I think I should point out that there really is a Sarasota, Florida, a writer named Edgar Allan Poe, private investigators, etc. Just saying.
Seriously, thanks for the review. I’m signing copies at Mystery Mike’s Friday morning at Bouchercon if anyone wants to stop by and complain about the cover.
See ya,
Rick
Rick, I’m looking forward to seeing you at BOUCHERCON! I think the cover is very eye-catching!
it has yellow, my least favorite color
Maggie, yellow is the most eye-catching color. DAW Books had yellow spines for decades and lots of yellow in the cover artwork.
Maggie, it’s mostly green but I guarantee it’s all black and white inside. If that helps.
Sounds interesting. Hasn’t there been another book recently with a rare first of EAP as the mcguffin?
Rick, there have been some novels centered on finding Lovecraft’s NECRONOMICON. That’s the ultimate McGuffin!
I think the one I’m thinking of may have been a fantasy novel.
Off topic, but important:
I hope Jerry House and his family are okay and will continue to be. They’re in Gulf Breeze, FL, which on a barrier peninsula just south of Pensacola, and look to get hit pretty hard.
Rick, I have a sister who lives in Clearwater, FL and another who lives near Cape Canaveral, FL. They’re going to see a lot of rain the next few days.
