FORGOTTEN MUSIC #15: ROY ORBISON: THE MONUMENT SINGLES COLLECTION (2CDS +DVD)

You may think you’ve heard these Roy Orbison hits before but now, celebrating Orbison’s 75th birthday year, Roy Orbison: The Monument Singles Collection will prove you wrong. Restored to pristine mono, these remastered songs can be heard with their original sound for the first time since their original 7″ vinyl releases. Roy Orbison: The Monument Singles Collection includes all of Orbison’s classic hits from 1959-1966 plus some rarities. And the first-ever DVD release of Orbison performing nine songs from “The Monument Concert 1965” is included. For Roy Orbison fans, this is a must-buy. These songs never sounded so good! For the casual fan, the single CD edition, Roy Orbison: The Monument Singles A-Sides would be a happy compromise. Either way, it’s great to hear these wonderful songs the way they were meant to be heard. I found Ed Ward’s commentary below full of Orbison facts I wasn’t aware of. GRADE: A

Dangerous to even seen this list because his voice can stay in my head for weeks. Totally original voice.

The Big O’s voice really sounds great on these CDs, Bill. I enjoyed listening to some of Roy Orbison’s more obscure songs.

He wasn’t my favorite of the Sun Records gang, but that’s like saying THE BIG SLEEP isn’t my favorite crime novel…you know, I’ll be very happy the next time I read it…

I use FireFox and WORDPRESS and the graph is there, Todd. I don’t understand graphic presentation on the Internet. It’s a Black Art. Anybody else having trouble with the graphic?

What Bill said. We were fortunate enough to get to see him one last time six months before his untimely death and he was as good as ever.

In 1995 in London we saw ONLY THE LONELY – THE ROY ORBISON STORY. I never would have believed anyone could “do” Roy the way people do Elvis and others but Larry Branson did a heck of a job.

Still, there was only one Roy.

ONLY THE LONELY–THE ROY ORBISON STORY needs to be revived, Jeff. I think my favorite Roy Orbison song is “Crying.”

I am ordering this one despite having a couple of other Orbison collections. I also loved his contributions to the Travelling Wilburys.

ROY ORBISON: THE MONUMENT SINGLES COLLECTION is fast becoming one of my favorite CDs, Jeff. Every time I hear Orbison sing “Crying” the hairs on my neck stand on end!

“Crying” is a definite favorite of mine too, along with the (just as sad) classic “It’s Over.”
