NEW BED FOR THE GUEST ROOM!

IMG_0511
In our never-ending quest to stimulate the U.S. Economy, Diane and I went out and bought a new bed–Beautyrest mattress, box-spring, upgraded bed frame, and headboard–for the Guest Room. Diane has been busy over the past six months cleaning out her mother’s bedroom. We had that room painted, going from white to blue. New windows and window treatments were installed. We had the carpet cleaned. Diane got rid of some furniture, too. A curio hutch, her mother’s headboard and foot-board, and swivel rocker are all gone now. Are you contemplating home improvements?

    Very nice!

I had a lot of summer project plans–but mostly of the clean-out/reorganize/donate/throwaway variety. I did manage to get a good portion of the pantry and laundry room cleaned out, but other plans (especially going through paperwork) didn’t come to fruition. And now I’ve already started work and school starts tomorrow, paperwork (the endless reams of it!) will have to wait until next summer probably.

P.S. O/T, but I saw a Saints schedule in the paper yesterday and realized pre-season is right around the corner (they play their first game August 11).

Deb, yes it’s hard to believe that NFL football is upon us. The Bills play their first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts this coming weekend.

Deb, you’re starting work early! Our public schools traditionally begin after Labor Day. For some unknown reason, my College has decided to start classes on August 30 so I’m in “School Mode” right now: working on lectures, making handouts, etc. Hope you have a great School Year!

deb I work on paperwork while watching tv at night. I may have to rewind a bit, or pause, but I do get a sense of accomplishment

Nice, but isn’t that bed a bit small for a couple? 🙂

    Queen size or less?
These box spring beds are really comfortable, remember them from our travels to the USA.
Just looking at it i feel sleepy again …

    PS:

Have a good “College Year”, everybody!

For us retied people it’s become like this that often we don’t know what day of the week it is – oh, the pleasure of not having to get up at a certain time …

Actually, I often have to get up at four or five o’clock, because our old dog has to pee – but luckily I can return to sleep then …

wolfe, my dad had a business card, that said no money, no worries, no job, no stress I totally get the not always knowing the day of the week.

Sadly, I’m getting up earlier than when I was working. This summer its the time I work on the big project: combining 2 houses full of books and “stuff” into one.
It’s coolish earlier so work in the rooms without ceiling fans then

George, I feel sorry for you in a way because of your allergy – pets, especially cats and dogs, are such a wonderful thing to have! And they keep us lazy oldsters moving too!

Whether it’s rain or shine, the dog has to go for a walk – at 14 years now, she’s also moving slower but still interested in her surroundings.

And our little tomcat (two years old now, snowy white with just one black spot) is unbeleivable and the realtionship or rather friendship between the two animals is also fascinating …

Wolf, when I was a kid my family had plenty of pets: dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, fish, etc. But when I became a teen-ager I developed allergies. I’ve gone through the process of allergy shots, but I have no plans of testing their effectiveness by acquiring any animals.

George, that reminds me of the story of an old friend who visited us some years ago and suddenly, our cat (another one, long dead, but also very friendly) jumped on his lap and he started to stroke it – when suddenly he said:

OMG, I shouldn’t do that – I’m allergic to cat hair!

But nothing happened – seems he’d somehow “lost” that allergy, his body/immune system had adjusted …

        PS:

I know that allergies are nothing to joke about, one of my relatives is allergic to wasp stings – he always has this “set” with him to inject something in order to prevent that deadlyanaphylactic shock …

Hope that your allergy is not that bad!

Wolf, cats are my Number One allergy followed by molds, pollen, and grasses. I have no food allergies that I’m aware of!

A new sofa in the TV room. Phil sits with his head against the back and we noticed last night, the leather was worn away. We needed one anyway. This one was as hard as a rock because it was a sleeper sofa.

Very nice, George. I guess I’m fortunate, I’ve never had any allergies to anything. But then until about 30 years ago, it didn’t seem like so many people had allergies. I wonder what happened.

Rick, I grew up without allergies. But once I developed them as a teenager my life changed. No pets, limited exposure to “nature,” and lots of time in the A/C. That’s why I get so much reading done!

Rick, I have zero interest in the Olympics. After all the cheating with “performance-enhancing” drugs in the last couple Olympics, I’ve lost interest.

There were an extremely small number of drug cheaters, George. Almost all of the competitors are clean, and their sports wouldn’t reward such use with anything much anyway. Think the young girl who won a medal for Air Rifle Competition was drugged up? You’re being too tough on Olympic sport. Sure the Russians doped, but that was an aberration. I’m guessing you just aren’t interested in the events, which is too bad because there are some great competitions.

      2. george Post author

Rick, I am suspicious of athletes doping because there has been so much of it on the professional, semi-professional, and amateur levels over the years. That 19-year-old redhead who won the first U.S. Gold Medal is probably clean, but many other athletes in Rio may not be.

      3. Wolf Böhrendt

        George, the same with us!

And to read that even in the Paralymoics there was heavy doping, especially by the Russians!

I still remember those days when most of the “Communist” countries had women competing who looked like men and later the reports when they complained that their lives had been ruined by those male hormone treatments, horrible …

        PS and rather OT:

My wife is afan of water polo, there the Hungarians and other East Europeans are good – and it’s fun to watch!

I used to joke that she’s only waiting for those moments when they lose (or the other player pulls off …) their swimming trunks …

Nice. Looking good. We have a couch on the den where I sit and read. It opens into a bed but we haven’t gotten a lot of use to it.

We did get the new air conditioner.

Next project : for a long time Jackie has wanted to do something about the hall floor, which runs most of the way through the apartment from the door, past the den and living room, makes a right turn to the kitchen and left to the bathroom and bedroom. Normally she has to have it stripped and polished once a year.

Now she is covering it with wood -like laminate interlocking tiles, and is doing the kitchen while she’s at it. We’ll buy the materials in a week or so and the super will install them while we’re in New Orleans.

Jeff, you have a super Super! It’s great to have someone get home improvements done while you’re enjoying yourselves in the Big Easy! Great planning!

I’ve always liked dogs but Jackie is animal -adverse plus we used to go away for weeks every summer. Neither of us grew up in a household with pets, though my father did keep tropical fish for years.

Jeff, all pets require effort and money. My sister has two little dogs that are continually at the vet’s office. She spends thousands on them. I’d rather buy books.

Linda got a corner curio cabinet and we picked it up Friday! She keeps tea cups in it!

Sofa beds were invented by chiropractors to stimulate trade! I had one years ago in a studio apartment and it almost crippled me!

Bob, I’ve slept on a few sofa beds over the years. Most of them were uncomfortable. Diane’s mother collected tea cups in her curio cabinet, too.

Bob and George re sofa beds:

That’s true, they are torture tools!

We had a leak in our wonderful water bed some time ago and so were forced to sleep on the sofa bed in the guest room for a few nights – horrible!

So now I kno why guests don’t stay too long with us … 😉
Even though we put some extra soft stuff on top of the bed for them.

My mother collected miniature sugar and creamer sets, all of which we’d bring back from England in the summers. She left them all to Jackie but what would we do with them, and then there was the hassle of sending them across the country.

She let my sister have them.
