In addition to our new Bosch dishwasher, Diane and I also bought a new Frigidaire Above the Range microwave and a new Frigidaire range. Our General Electric stove is 26 years old. One burner on the glass top doesn’t work. Diane worries about the oven because the temperature can suddenly jump from 350 degrees to 500 degrees!
Our Sharp Above the Range microwave is 20 years old. It still works, but there’s a crack in the front near the viewing window that I don’t like the looks of. The appliance store offered a deal if we bought both a range and a microwave of the same brand. Since most of the stoves and microwaves they carried ranked closely in Consumer Reports, it was a no-brainer to buy the combo and save a few hundred dollars. Do you like your stove and microwave? Are you thinking of buying new ones?
Very nice! We sort of cobble together our appliances and make it work. We have a GE built-in oven that is both ancient and too small, although it gets the job done. Although we have an Amana electric cooktop, I rarely use it. We have two portable induction plates that I use and love for all-purpose cooking (stainless steel or cast iron cookware will only work with induction however). And, of course, John uses the grill, smoker, wok, and air fryer. Our microwave is an off-brand we bought for about $70 at Walmart a couple of years ago. We use it primarily to reheat leftovers and pop popcorn. But when I win the lottery…entire kitchen remodel ahead!
Deb, we bought mostly General Electric appliances when I owned GE stock. But, when I sold it we considered other brands recommended by CONSUMER REPORTS. In 2016, GE sold their appliance division to Haier for $5.4 Billion.
Nice one. The Kelley pre-Recession buying binge continues.
We had an old, crappy, too small microwave, so bought a new white (like yours) Westinghouse model a couple of years ago that we are happy with.
When we moved in here, they told us the buildings were all-electric, so we got a Tappan electric stove. Perhaps it is because these days we don’t cook much, but it is still working well after over 30 years. I’m sure if we used it as regularly as Diane does, Jackie would have bought a new one by now too.
Jeff, since Diane brought the Breville Smart Oven, she only uses the big oven on the stove for turkeys at Thanksgiving or baking pies/cakes. With just the two of us, the Breville is perfect for cooking our small meals.
Congrats on all your new appliances, long may they serve you. We have the ovens, stovetop and microwave that were here when we bought the house, all of them working fine. They are Frigidaire. The stovetop is in the island, so it has to have an integrated downdraft fan, which I don’t like much, but otherwise they are fine.
Rick, many of our friends have Frigidaire appliances and told us they liked them. We used to have a Frigidaire refrigerator that lasted over 20 years in our basement.
Why might the coming recession drive purchases…retirement account far more a percentage of the daily bread than the pension, etc.?
The stove/oven is a GE Spectra, glass-top enclosed-eye electric, oven seems to not wildly fluctuate. A decade old? Here when Alice bought the house. Since we merged households, we have two microwaves in the kitchen, an LG and a Sharp. Both not too shabby.
Todd, the upcoming Recession is being cause in part by Trump’s manic Tariffs. A Tariff is a tax so the prices of all imported appliances will go up. Our Sharp microwave is still working great after 20 years! But, Diane and I don’t like the crack below the viewing window so a replacement will show up tomorrow.
Oh, I wasn’t thinking in terms of how the tariffs he’s trying to push will encourage the recession…
I detest the glasstop stove I have, (Samsung) Impossible to not leave marks if you slide a pan or have a spill. I am stuck with electric and apparently now it’s supposed to be better for the environment but damn it is hard to keep clean.
Patti, Diane uses WEIMAN GLASS COOK TOP CLEANER that does a fine job. You might be able to find it at Wax-Mart or a large grocery store.
As you may recall, I don’t have a range, but a separate cooktop and oven. I live in fear that my cooktop will crap out any time (one burner already half dead). I’ve had GE repairmen here a couple times, and they tell me, if the cooktop fails don’t even bother calling – no parts for the burners or the touch-control circuitry. The built in microwave magnetron died a year ago, but I didn’t even bother to ask if it was replaceable; just bought a countertop microwave. Unfortunately the microwave control panel also controls the oven, and if the oven control fails, same story – forget it. The oven element went nova a year ago, but that was just a generic replacement park. But I should be good at least 6 months; appliance failures here always happen more or less between Thanksgiving & New Years. Congrats on the snazzy new additions.
Art, you might want to scope out a replacement range because Entropy is definitely at work in Livermore! I did the research (CONSUMER REPORTS) and Diane made the model/color selections.
Lording your new purchases over the peasants is gauche, George, and come the revolution we know who’s going to the guillotine! We have a cooktop oven and I don’t like it! Oh, it’s easier to clean, but it takes forever to lower the temperature! Again, I’m too lazy to run downstairs to check out the brands, but the microwave is above the stove and they were installed at the same time, when Linda’s mother died and she went hog wild with her inheritance!
BTW, today was granddaughter Klara’s third birthday and there was a nice party at her house! The weather was perfect and the kids got to play all over the acreage!
Bob, it’s 42 degrees here in Western New York. That’s about 15 degrees below Normal. The weather-guessers say we should be in the 70s later this week. Congratulations on Klara’s 3rd Birthday!
