NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES 2012

I have no special insights into these Championship Games, but I think that the Brady Bunch will beat the Ravens and the surprising 49ers will defeat the Giants. Don’t bet the house on my predictions.

I can’t tell you the sorrow in southern Louisiana that the Saints couldn’t hold that lead in San Francisco for the last minute of the game last week. However, the next day when Green Bay lost..well, that took away some of the sting. Now I have no horse in the race, I can watch the games without squealing, shouting, yelping, and watching through open fingers.

Like you I was not surprised the Giants were able to go into Green Bay and put a beating on the Packers. The 49ers, however, have a much tougher defense. I’m just not confident either way, but the Giants are definitely playing their best at the moment. It remains to be seen how much a muddy field affects the game.

One thing I know: it’s a good thing they didn’t have to go back to the Superdome, where they got blitzed. Deb, I was rooting for the Saints too.

    Go Giants!

My mom was a die-hard Niner fan, so for sentimental reasons I’m pulling for San Francisco. Also, I’m impressed at the job Harbaugh has done. Who expected them to do this well so soon?

Too bad about New Orleans. Even though I have no connection to Louisiana whatsoever, their Super Bowl win a few years ago was such a joyful moment that I’ve kind of become a fan of Brees and the Saints.

The Saints have a great offense, Drongo. Brees is certainly one of the elite QBs in the NFL. Some “experts” are predicting the Harbaughs (Jim of the Niners and John of the Ravens) might meet each other in the Super Bowl.

My picks, The Jets(woefully inadequate for so many years and probably sinking back into obscurity after a couple of decent years) and the “Skins(terrible since Snyder bought them, they don’t look to get any better any time soon).

I feel it might be the Giants and New England meeting. How that one will go I have no idea.

If the Giants and the Patriots make it to the Super Bowl again, Randy, it could be replay of the 2007 Super Bowl when those teams met in a memorable game.

Drongo–I can tell you that, having lived through it right here on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, the only thing comparable to the Saints winning the Superbowl was the end of World War II, there was so much celebration and joy. Plus, it seemed to be a symbolic (if not actual) end to the troubles of Katrina and its aftermath. We’re already planning next season, when the Superbowl is scheduled to be played in the Superdome. So far, never has the host city’s team played in the Super Bowl when their city was hosting. Next year, the Saints and the Who Dat nation hope to change that.

I think the nation cheered when the Saints won the Super Bowl, Deb. Part of it was Katrina, part of it was their long history as an underdog team. But I admire Drew Brees for choosing to play in New Orleans. I heard an interview with Brees on NPR that brought tears to my eyes when he spoke of his emotional bond with New Orleans and the Saints fans. He’s the Real Deal.

I agree with your guesses, George and will be rooting for the Patriots and ‘Niners, especially the latter. Four months ago I called the Super Bowl a Packers-Patriots match, but the Giants upset that. I’ve never cared much for the Giants (sorry, Jeff) so that’s all the more reason to hope SF can beat them. As for the other game, I say it depends on the QB performances.

The four teams remaining in the Championship round are all worthy opponents, Rick. Any of these teams can win depending on the turnovers and the lucky breaks.

He feels about like Scott Norwood after Buffalo’s first Super Bowl. They had a real chance to win it too.

The Ravens should have won on that Lee Evans catch, Jeff. He caught the ball in the end zone. That’s a TD. The Patriots DB knocked the ball away AFTER THE CATCH. But the Ravens didn’t challenge the play.

I can only tell you who should win, I can’t play the game for them. The 49er play calling and execution in the 4th quarter and overtime was pathetic. Luckily, I don’t have a farm. And being a native New Yorker I can’t say I’m bothered by the outcome of that game. The only team I didn’t want to see advance was the Ravens, and mostly because of Ray “Murdering Scum” Lewis.

The rematch of the Giants and the Patriots from the 2007 Super Bowl will generate plenty of interest, Bob. The Giants peaked at the right time.

I know what I’ll be doing on February 5th at 3:15 p.m : reading a book, or taking a walk, or filling the bird feeder, watching needles fall from the Douglas Firs. Anything, in fact, except watching the television, since I really don’t give a hoot about the S-bowl this year. Whomever wins: meh.

Since I don’t care about or watch pro basketball, soccer or hockey, and since I only pay attention to college basketball in late March, and since I’m not a baseball fan until the playoffs, the sports page in the paper is a complete “skip” except for the NFL draft, whenever that is. Same with weekend TV except for the occasional program and the local weather. Too much damn GOP crap on now anyway.

Plenty of good reading time between now and Spring when we get back into the garden!

I’ve seen every Super Bowl since day one in 1967 (I went up to the Bronx to watch it with friends and we went out to play a little touch during halftime), even the boring ones (way too many of them). With the Giants being in it for the fifth time I’ll be there for sure. Actually it was really nice last year: the hotel in Florida had a pizza party for the residents and we watched the game on the big screen in the lobby.

I’ve watched all the Super Bowls, too, Jeff. My parents went to Super Bowl XXVII and watched the Bills lose to the Cowboys in the Rose Bowl. I have no interest in actually attending a Super Bowl.
