NFL DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS, PART ONE

Peyton Manning gets my vote for MVP for his miraculous come-back after a devastating neck injury. The Ravens are a good team, but the Broncos are a better team. This game kicks off at 4:30 P.M. ET on CBS. The second game, Packers vs. Niners should be a great game. Although Art Scott says the Niners are DOOMED, I’m not so sure. I’m picking Green Bay in a very close game. The late game kicks off at 8:00 P.M. ET on FOX. What do you think will happen today?

Go Ravens. Go Niners. Those are my hopes. If I had money on it I might pick differently, except I can’t bring myself to support the long-hated Geldings. It wouldn’t break my heart if the Pack won, however. My focus, of course, is on Seattle. Go Hawks!

Definitely the Broncos. I also think the Packers are beatable.

I just sent you a link where Nate Silver predicts a Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl.

Jeff, I’m presently reading Nate Silver’s marvelous THE SIGNAL AND THE NOISE! Our friends in the Great Northwest (Cap’n Bob, Rick, etc.) will love that Seahawks pick!

I’d be more optimistic if Manning had a better cold weather record. Right now it’s 3 degrees with snow on the ground. One hopes for the best, but, ya know…

    The Packers will probably win.

You’re right, Drongo. Payton Manning is a classic dome stadium QB. While you have 3 degrees, Western NY is basking in 55 degree temps! Very unusually for January. That foot of snow that covered everything here has totally melted away!

I’ll be pulling for Broncos (Barbara is a Denver person) as I don’t like the Ravens much. In the second game it’s no surprise I’ll be cheering the Niners on. The Packers are good, but I’m hoping the Niners put it together, especially pass defense, and beat them.

The two best games of the weekend are probably Niners-Packers and Seahawks-Falcons. I’ll talk a little about that latter game tomorrow.

The Ravens are 9-point underdogs, Rick. If I were a betting man, I’d be tempted to take the Ravens and the points. The Niners are mere 3-point favorites over the Packers. That’s not a vote of confidence by Vegas.

It’s very frustrating for a Giants fan, knowing that they handled both the Niners (in Candlestick) and Packers easily this season, yet didn’t make the playoffs because they lost to the pathetic Eagles among other games (Steelers, Redskins) they should have won.

They only have themselves to blame.

I don’t think that’s exactly true. It was Denver’s horrible coverage (or lack of coverage) that gave away the tieing touchdown.

The Ravens wouldn’t have been able to score that tieing TD if Peyton had gone for the First Down instead of just handing the ball off and punting, Jeff. The Broncos had the Ravens on the robes and let the WIN slip away.

BRONCOS LOSE! BRONCOS LOSE! BRONCOS LOSE!

I helped. I didn’t watch the overtime. Seems every time I switched over to another station the Ravens scored.

So much for DOOM. Whoever’s in charge decided Saturday was Harbaugh Day. The difference was that the Packers hadn’t a clue in dealing with Kap’s running game. He was doing the kind of things people dreamed RG3 would do, but didn’t. I’m still afraid of Seattle next weekend, of it comes to that.

I just hope I didn’t use up my karma on today’s picks. The only team I really wanted to see lose was Denver. My biggest hope is, of course, for the Seahawks o win. Fingers are crossed.

I’d love to take credit for the Bronco loss. Maybe I have powers of which I am unaware. No, I don’t gamble on the games. I only put my money on sure things like lottery tickets and slot machines.
