NFL WEEK 16 (2020)

After the Buffalo Bills defeated the Denver Broncos 48-19 last Saturday, they face a divisional opponent in the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. The 6-8 Patriots won’t make the Playoffs this season. Cam Newton proved to be ineffectual at quarterback. The Big Question is how will the Bills treat this game? Will they “rest” starters to keep them healthy for the Playoffs? Or will they step on the gas to beat a bothersome opponent? We’ll see tomorrow. How will your favorite NFL fare today?

The Saints played the Vikings on Christmas Day and won the game (by a wide margin), thereby clinching the NFC South (the Bucs could technically end the season with the same 11-4 record as the Saints, but because the Saints beat the Bucs twice during the regular season, the Saints would still have the win). The Saints now need to let Drew Brees rest up and heal.

Oops! The Saints have one more regular season game—next Sunday, versus the Panthers—so they will end the season either 12-4 or 11-5. But either way (and, naturally, I’d prefer the 12-4 record), the Bucs can only tie them, win-loss wise, and so the Saints will still win the NFC South.

Deb, I agree with you on resting Brees. I’m hoping the Buffalo Bills clinch their Playoff slot tomorrow so they can rest some starters next week against the Miami Dolphins.

The 5-9 Giants technically could still (don’t ask) win their pathetic division this year, but they won’t. Even when they were a much better team, they had trouble with the Baltimore Ravens. Today they will lose at home and be officially eliminated.

Jeff, in the wacky NFC East, anything could happen! What do you think of the Washington QB Haskins who was photographed in a Strip Club–no mask–and was fined $40,000 by the team?

Seahawks – Rams for the division. Tough game. I’m always afraid of the Seahawks’ failings in games like this, so we’ll see. I’m having a relapse of my illness, was up most of the night, so I may be asleep for much of the game.

The Ravens need to win out and get help. I thought we had the help Saturdaynight with the Raiders improbably leading the Dolphins, but a late pass interference by the Raiders put the Dolphins in place to pull out the win. I wasn’t confident we were going to get any of the losses we would need, so that was depressing. Today, though, the Jets improbably beat the Browns (hobbled by the coronavirus), and the Steelers finally pulled it back together and beat the Colts. So when the Ravens beat the Giants today (sorry, Jeff) (not sorry), it moved them into a playoff spot, if they win next week at the Bengals. Much relieved.

After what happened last week, the Browns should have been better prepared for the Jets. I knew the Giants had no chance today. I couldn’t believe the Steelers won.

Jeff, the Browns did have two excellent running backs and FOUR tight ends. That should have been enough to beat the Jets.
