ORPHAN BLACK, SEASON TWO PREMIERE

orphanblack_header__span
Todd Mason and Patti Abbott raved about Orphan Black last Spring and that motivated me to watch it on BBC America. Todd and Patti were right! The slowly unraveling of the plot about clones held my interest. Now, Season Two begins tonight (check your local listings for times in your area). This original Canadian science fiction television series stars Tatiana Maslany who plays several identical looking women. I marvel at the way Tatiana Maslany makes all the women she plays unique. Masterful acting! The twisty plot is full of surprises. Orphan Black, Season One is available on DVD and Blu-ray. And BBC America is running an ORPHAN BLACK marathon today. Highly recommended!

Rave might be a bit strong for my reaction, but I do like it a lot, and it got better as it went along in the first season (series for BBC’s sake, even though as you note it’s primarily a Canadian production with US and UK money tagged in and even–oddly enough, mostly set in Canada). Maslany is fine (as is the rest of the cast), and the scripts aren’t too shabby. Also rather deft in juggling its sf, crime- and family-drama aspects. Black is the current tv…ORPHAN BLACK, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, THE BLACKLIST…tried DEADBEAT yet?

We got home just in time for the premiere of Season Two, which we will record and watch tonight. Can’t wait.

This THE TRUE HISTORY OF SF thing which follows ORPHAN is an atrocity, even though it does give some time for Brian Aldiss to speak about his writing “Supertoys….” (the literary source of the film AI).

Have not seen DEADBEAT but I thought Tyler Labine was funny as the goofy sidekick on REAPER. In fact, had the series starred him and Ray Wise, who had the role he was born to play as The Devil, it might still be running. Actual star Bret Harrison was a bore.

Oh, I’m not sure that’s altogether fair, but DEADBEAT has more than a little of REAPER’s dna in it…Missy Peregrym was a charming kid in REAPER as well, and I’m glad her CTV/ABC cop series ROOKIE BLUE has been doing well (well enough that, like THE ROOKIES before it, the title becomes a bit ridiculous as the seasons mount up).

Todd, I have police series fatigue (for that matter, I’m tired of vampires and zombies, too). It would take a rave review to get me to watch one. I am watching FARGO on FX, but it doesn’t feel like a police series.
