Patti, we’re going out with friends tonight and Diane wants to see a comedy. THE HEAT is at the top of our list. Plenty of our religious friends want to see AUGUSTINE.
What’s not to like? Well, I think your first sentence–“giant robots battle giant alien monsters”–neatly sums up what I would not like. I promised one of my daughters we’d go to see “The Bling Ring,” which I hope doesn’t give her any ideas about other people’s property. Meanwhile, I’ve been enjoying the Francois Truffaut movies they’ve been showing Friday nights on TCM. Haven’t even heard of “Augustine” and apparently am not missing much.
Deb, summer is the silly season for movies. PACIFIC RIM’s audience is 12-year-old boys (and 64-year-olds who feel like they’re 12). THE BLING RING is on our list, too. I didn’t enjoy reading Augustine very much so I’m not interested in the movie. Love Truffaut!
Normally Pacific Rim would be a Netflix movie for me but I’m a fan of Del Toro’s so I’ll probably go see it in a theater. It’s not a personal project for him, he’s more of a hired hand on this one. He picked it up after At The Mountains of Madness was cancelled.
Also love Truffaut-own most of his films on disc. Was disappointed in Such A Gorgeous Girl Like Me-TCM had a pretty crappy print of this one.
Patti, much of Augustine’s books don’t have anything to do with religion, either. My religious friends have an idealized view of Augustine (who was a former libertine).
Loved Pacific Rim. Giant monsters and giant robots. I was ready for this when I saw the first preview. And it has Ron Perlman. Highly enjoyable. But it is long so watch the soda consumption. You do not want to have to get up and miss something.
I saw AUGUSTINE last night. If it comes your way, skip it .

Jackie wants to see THE HEAT too but is still not ready to sit in a theater.
Jeff, tell Jackie to start out with a short movie (maybe something like DESPICABLE ME 2) that’s around 90 minutes.

400 BLOWS is a classic, Deb.
I never heard of AUGUSTINE either.

Steve, like you I’m a fan of Del Toro’s work. Even in this Summer popcorn movie you can see his unique talents.
I agree it sounds like a hoot and it’s supposed to be way better than the last couple of Transformers movies.
Rick, you’re going to really enjoy PACIFIC RIM! Action and excitement in buckets!
AUGUSTINE has nothing to do with religion. But don’t tell t hem that. They will be shocked at its content.

I’m with you, Scott! PACIFIC RIM satisfies that 12-year-old kid in me. Great Summer Blockbuster!
Not sure that I would agree with this not being a personal project after listening to this interview:

Which is well worth listening to, by the way.
Carl, interesting interview! You’ll love PACIFIC RIM!
