PORGY & BESS: THE BROADWAY MUSICAL

porgy and bess
I’ve never been a big fan of Porgy & Bess so factor that in while you read this review. This controversial new touring version of the Gershwin classic features a great cast. It has the classic songs I really like: “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty of Nothin’,” and “That Ain’t Necessary So.” But this story of doomed love was tough for Diane and me to watch. Even though this new version has “compressed” the original work, it still felt long. Porgy & Bess broke plenty of barriers when it first appeared in 1935. But in the 21st Century, it’s a bit of an odd duckling. GRADE: C+

I like Porgy and Bess, and have an original cast recording from about 20 years ago that I enjoy now and then (always in Summer). I also have several albums or partial albums of the music, sung and instrumental that I like listening to. Truthfully I, like you, enjoy the music and songs more than the play.

An aside: I went to a local Fred Meyer store to get an Audra McDonald CD and they said they don’t carry them. Not enough interest. But yet another inane spitter of childish doggerel (AKA rapper) can find an audience. No wonder the Russians aren’t afraid of us.

I’m glad you said that. Audra McDonald is amazing (and she really wasted her talents on the awful PRIVATE PRACTICE) but I agree with you and Rick: love the music but not the musical. It’s a total downer.
