I just returned from my semi-annual appointment with my urologist. Last week I had blood work that included a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test. Today my urologist gave me the results. I scored a 1.1. Any score under 4.0 is good. Guys, if you haven’t gotten your PSA test this year now’s the time to do it. Do not put it off! Ladies, remind the over-40 men in your life to take a PSA test at least once a year. Early detection makes all the difference! And keep eating pizza to protect the prostate! (It’s the lycopene in the tomato sauce.)
Any truth to the rumor that you stayed up all night studying for it?
We just had our fourth friend diagnosed with this. All of them work in the same hallway at WSU. A fifth guy on that hallway had stomach cancer. Another had colon. I am thinking we work(ed) in a toxic building. I wonder what was on the ground before 1989 when the building went up. UGH.
Dan, I’m diligent, but not that diligent.
Patti, I know what you mean. I work in a “historical” building that has mold issues. I blame many of my allergy attacks on the toxic building I work in. Rehabbing old buildings is a nice idea, but there are consequences.
Yikes, Patti – that is scary.
Way to go, George. 1.1 is a great score. Mine is in the 3+ range and has stayed more or less level the last several years.
Jeff, you need to eat more pizza!
That’s never a problem with Jackie around.
I run at a 2 and have this test annually, as instructed by the doc. This is an easy test. The one I hate is the colonoscapy. (however the hell it’s spelled)
Rick, the preparation for the colonoscopy is the worst part. The actual procedure (with those wonderful Happy Drugs) is a piece of cake.
Here doctors generally advise PSA fifty onward, annually, so I have some time though I go through the other routine tests. I believe cranberry juice is also a good prevention against prostate problems.
No happy drugs, George. I go to the hospital, get checked over, prepped, knocked out, wake up lie on the gurney for half an hour and then Barbara drives me home. I get to take an Advil if I want.
Prashant, I love cranberries in any form. During the Christmas holidays, I usually make cranberry bread and cranberry cookies. Yummy!
Rick, the docs around here are very big on Happy Drugs. They love to use Versed on colonoscopy patients. I’m high for a day after they give Versed to me.
Cranberries traditionally held to be good for urinary tract infections…if also prostate, that would be nice.
Todd, cranberries and pomegranates possess incredible health properties. I eat both on a regular basis.
I’m due now for a colonoscopy but it’ll be January before I can get to it. I’m adamant about not drinking that sludge. I know there are pills that do just a good a job. As for the PSA tests, I have it checked twice a year and usually end up around a 2.
