PSA

nurse
I just returned from my semi-annual appointment with my urologist. Last week I had blood work that included a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test. Today my urologist gave me the results. I scored a 1.1. Any score under 4.0 is good. Guys, if you haven’t gotten your PSA test this year now’s the time to do it. Do not put it off! Ladies, remind the over-40 men in your life to take a PSA test at least once a year. Early detection makes all the difference! And keep eating pizza to protect the prostate! (It’s the lycopene in the tomato sauce.)

We just had our fourth friend diagnosed with this. All of them work in the same hallway at WSU. A fifth guy on that hallway had stomach cancer. Another had colon. I am thinking we work(ed) in a toxic building. I wonder what was on the ground before 1989 when the building went up. UGH.

Patti, I know what you mean. I work in a “historical” building that has mold issues. I blame many of my allergy attacks on the toxic building I work in. Rehabbing old buildings is a nice idea, but there are consequences.

Yikes, Patti – that is scary.

Way to go, George. 1.1 is a great score. Mine is in the 3+ range and has stayed more or less level the last several years.

I run at a 2 and have this test annually, as instructed by the doc. This is an easy test. The one I hate is the colonoscapy. (however the hell it’s spelled)

No happy drugs, George. I go to the hospital, get checked over, prepped, knocked out, wake up lie on the gurney for half an hour and then Barbara drives me home. I get to take an Advil if I want.

I’m due now for a colonoscopy but it’ll be January before I can get to it. I’m adamant about not drinking that sludge. I know there are pills that do just a good a job. As for the PSA tests, I have it checked twice a year and usually end up around a 2.
