RAGE BAKING: THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF FLOUR, FURY, AND WOMEN’S VOICES By Kathy Gunst & Katherine Alford

Kathy Gunst first got the idea of RAGE BAKING, a collection of Recipes and conversations for our time, while watching the Brett Kavanaugh hearings. As Kathy Gunst grew madder and madder at the hypocrisy of the hearings, she decided to channel her rage into baking. Several of her friends agreed to join her in this project and Rage Baking is the result. There are essays about women interspaced with the delicious recipes. My favorite is Chocolate Raspberry Triple-Layer Cake (p. 101).

If you’re looking for an excellent cookbook, Rage Baking fits the bill. The bonus is the thoughtful essays on our current state of affairs. GRADE: A

As I said when this book was featured on Smart B*tches, Trashy Books: I love to cook and bake—and I’m as mad as the next woman about what has happened to our country since the 2016 election—but there are some areas of my life I want untouched by anger—and baking is one of them.

[Also, iirc, I believe there’s some controversy in the “Rage Baking” community that two white women expropriated the original idea from a group of women of color and have, since then, minimized their contributions to the concept.]

Deb, Diane and I are appalled at the political situation nationally. And Trump’s chances of winning in November increase daily! Yikes! So Diane and I baked Banana Nut Muffins yesterday because we need some comfort food. Yummy!

You had me at Chocolate Raspberry Triple-Layer Cake, George.

I’m not a rage baker but the current political situation is turning me into a rage eater, Vote the bastard out so I can start losing weight!

Jerry, the Stock Market is down 1000 points today. The Global Economy is on the cusp of Recession. None of this will help Trump get reelected.

Jeff, WORDPRESS’s spell check loves to be mischievous and change words without letting me know. I type in flour…but it gets changed to flower. Maddening!

I have to check everything before I send it or post it. Yesterday, spellcheck changed “pole” to “Paul”! Why?

Jeff, you are so right! It’s maddening dealing with the WORDPRESS spellchecker! In the Good Old Days software used to ask you if you wanted to accept the proposed changes. Now, this rogue software just institutes the changes willy-nilly! BAH!

Baking is probably my favorite part of cooking, but the thing I do the least. Not sure rage baking is calming for me.

I discovered Penzey’s spices via their anti tRUMP posts on facebook and now have an incredible range of spices and blends. If there is a store near you, I’d suggest getting on their mailing list. They frequently have really good deals. $2 for a small jar of a selected spice/blend, sometimes $1. Just Sat., I bought a couple of small jars of Cajun spice and a couple of larger jars of a blend (for Christmas goodie bags for my group of college friends) and got a free 1/2 cup jar of Chinese 5 spice, which is sooo aromatic. Used it to zhush up a lean cuisine pad thai tv dinner. I also make omelets in a microwave omelet maker and experiment with their blends

Book seems a bit silly to me. I don’t cook or bake. Being diabetic I don’t eat a lot of baked goods anyway. Can’t wait to see Cap’n Bobs post on this.

Oh, I think this a wonderful book and I’m so glad you mentioned it, George! And I’m a goddam liar! Who cares?

As for Trump, always remember that he saved us from Hitlery! That alone ought to earn him our gratitude! And the stock market is reacting to the Coronavirus, mamby-pamby organization that it is! And even down 1,000 points puts it way ahead of anything seen in the days of Obama and his predecessors!
