SOME WRITER! THE STORY OF E. B. WHITE By Melissa Sweet

some-writer
A children’s biography of E. B. White. That’s an unlikely book, but Melissa Sweet manages to pull it off. Using a collage design, Sweet presents E. B. White in his own words mostly. From White’s career on THE NEW YORKER to the classic children’s books he wrote, Sweet captures the essence of a complicated man in terms children (and adults) can understand. I read Stuart Little and Charlotte’s Web to Patrick and Katie. Diane read E. B. White’s classics to her classes. I love Essays of E. B. White. What’s your favorite E. B. White book? GRADE: A

We read CHARLOTTE’S WEB to our girls; not sure we got around to STUART LITTLE (bedtime stories was really my husband’s province; when he was out of town or otherwise unavailable, I’d end up reading them something like “13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird”). Certainly in my life, ELEMENTS OF STYLE was more important than any of White’s fiction.

    This looks wonderful.

I have, and have read more than once, the four book set published by Harper & Row, published in the early 1980s:

    THE LETTERS OF E.B. WHITE
    ESSAYS OF E.B. WHITE
ONE MAN’S MEAT by E.B. White
POEMS AND SKETCHES by E.B. White

All very enjoyable. I should read them again. I also have the James Thurber letters, many of which are to and from White.
