SONNY ROLLINS, TATTOO YOU, and Love and Rapture: The Best of Peabo Bryson

The great tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins died last week at the age of 95. And Peabo Bryson died last week from complications to stroke. Peabo was 75.

“Waiting On a Friend” by The Rolling Stones from Tattoo You is one of my favorite songs. Sonny Rollins plays the incredible sax solo, uncredited, but it’s him.

Love and Rapture: The Best of Peabo Bryson (2004) features Peabo’s biggest solo hits alongside his legendary duets like “A Whole New World” (with Regina Belle) and “Beauty and the Beast” (with Céline Dion). Peabo Bryson was a winner of two Grammy Awards, both attributed to his Disney duets.

I’m sad we’ve lost these two great artists. Are you a fan of Sonny Rollins or Peabo Bryson?

I don’t really know Bryson except as a singer of “slow jam” 1980s & 1990s hits. Rollins, I’m familiar with his work on other artist’s songs. I guess it’s off to Spotify to listen to some new-to-me music.

My favorite Sonny Rollins took place on the tv show called Sunday Night/Night Music, where he played sublimely with Leonard Cohen on “Who by Fire.” I have it on a cassette but haven’t heard it in years — but I can still remember it. Wonderful.

SUNDAY NIGHT, which became NIGHT MUSIC so stations didn’t have to schedule it on Sunday/Monday wee hours, was a wonderful opportunity to hear ranges of musicians playing with each other. Two seasons on NBC. Ben Sidran’s show on VH1 caught some of the same vibe, but didn’t quite match it.

I’ve liked Bryson work over the years, but there’s a reason Sonny Rollins was able to record albums with titles such as SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS. But, then, those who’ve suffered through my blog and comments on others’ know I’m a jazz fan first.

Rollins’s album FREEDOM SUITE is one of the works that SWEET FREEDOM the radio series, and then the blog, were named for. Max Roach and Oscar Brown, Jr.s FREEDOM NOW SUITE was another.
