As you have figured out, I am a Star Trek fan. The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy just aired its finale and I wanted more Star Trek content. Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated series but it’s aimed at true hardcore Star Trek fans. Plenty of Easter Eggs and inside jokes. I delayed watching this series because I thought it might be targeting much younger audiences, but I was wrong. The series has the Star Trek vibe and even some snarky humor. I certainly should have embraced this sooner! GRADE: Incomplete but trending towards a B+
A certain broad-spectrum appeal would be likely in any ST project in recent decades, though even the Saturday morning cartoon of the early ’70s, in all its typical for its time US kid animation clunk, had both some “real” sf writers and some attempts to do something interesting involved (the only early TREK item I was the first target audience for, though I preferred the “TOS” repeats as a youngster)
Now, if they engaged a few more writers such as Estleman on this one..I’ve barely seen more than a promo of this series so far, though.
Todd, friends who are way more Trekie than me love LOWER DECKS.
My father, the sf reader of my parents, was reasonably happy with ST the original, and I might well have seen its last episodes on first broadcast (in Alaska) when capable of having any clue (but not Too many, at age 3yo) what was going on.
Todd, my parents, brother, and sisters were immune to the charms of STAR TREK. But, I found a lot of friends who had the same enthusiasm for the series as I did.
No, 4yo by the end of the first series, albeit my father like many (most?) ST viewers, was less happy with season three.
Todd, there are a lot of ups and downs in the STAR TREK universe. There are marvelous episodes…and duds.
As with the STAR WARS franchise, I can take or leave STAR TREK with no ill effects on my blithe, bonny spirit. And, since I do not have Paramount+, it doesn’t really matter.
Jerry, I was captivated by STAR TREK back in the Sixties and have remained a fan.
Doubt we will watch it. We did watch the Starfleet Academy finale this week, and overall, despite a couple of weak episodes, we liked it. I guess Paul Giamatti left his “subtle” range back home. Boy, Tig Notaro has been everywhere lately.
Jeff, Paul Giamatti plays a real Bad Guy in STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY. The producers don’t give Holly Hunter much to do.
As William Shatner said to a gaggle of Trekkies on SNL, Get a Life! I liked the original series a lot, but never embraced the spinoffs!
Bob, the spin-off STAR TREK series have their highs and lows. Some of us never grow up…
Off topic, George. I hope you are celebrating Pi Day responsibly, hopefully with chocolate cream.
Jerry, as a matter of fact, Diane did bake an apple pie to celebrate Pi Day. A happy 3.14 to you, too!
