STAR TREK: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS [Blu-ray]

“The Best of Both Worlds” is a new version of the classic STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION 2-part episode from 1990. The first part (episode 74) was the June cliff-hanger and the second part (episode 75) was the season opener in September. This new Blu-ray version has been digitally restored, converted to high-definition quality, and enhanced with new special effects.

As you Trekkies might remember, these are the episodes where the Enterprise and the Federation have to take on the Borg. The stunner is the Borg assimilation of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). I remember wandering around all summer in 1990 wondering what was going to happen. September couldn’t have arrived fast enough! If you’re a fan of Star Trek, you’re going to love this restored classic. “The Best of Both Worlds” has also been broadcast in Regal Theaters as part of the promotion of the new Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Into the Darkness which opens May 17. Check out the trailer below.

I have been watching Star Trek the Next Generation on Netflix for the past few months, and am finally watching the last season. It is interesting how different our viewing experiences have been. While you waited all summer to find out Captain Picard’s fate, I immediately clicked on the second part of the episode. Instead of waiting each week for a new episode and months for a new season, I have been trying to pace myself by limiting my Star Trek viewing to 1 or 2 episodes per day. The term given for this new way of watching media is “binge viewing.” You might be interested in this article, “Netflix touts binge viewing: Is waiting better?,” which discuses some of the downsides of binge viewing from both business and human perspectives. http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/01/31/netflix-binge-viewing/

In an attempt to avoid any risk of coming across information about how the series ends, I unfortunately will postpone coming back to this post until I have watched the finale. I look forward to reading your reply in the near future!

By the way, “The Best of Both Worlds” was such an amazing episode! Due to its high quality, it is not surprising that a movie theater would decide to show this episode.

I just knew you were a Trekkie, Lauren! I, too, binged on a BBC America series, THE HOUR (Season 2). I watched the six one-hour episodes over two days. Sadly, THE HOUR was not renewed for another season. Watching THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS in Blu-ray was scintilating! I’m hoping the STAR TREK franchise continues with a successful movie on May 17.

What a clever idea. Take the two-parters from various shows and put them on blu-ray. this is the one Star Trek series I have seen many times. And my favorite by far.

Patti, you’re right about the clever marketing of these STAR TREK remastered and upgraded episodes. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS should be a big seller.

Every time I see Jeri Ryan the first thing that comes to mind is “Resistance is futile.” The Borg was memorable.

I didn’t like season 1 of The Hours so didn’t watch season 2.

Jeff, Katie watched the Second Season of THE HOUR and wanted someone to talk to about the conclusion. I was lukewarm about THE HOUR after watching Season One so I skipped Season Two until I learned about Katie’s dilemma. BBC America ON DEMAND had the complete set of THE HOUR (Season Two) so I just sat down and watch them. Katie and I had a good talk about the ending and came to the same conclusions.

Unlike many viewers, I disliked the Borg and found those episodes uncomfortable. Maybe it was the idea of being taken over by machines, I don’t know. I have a lot of favorite episodes, but the Borg ones are not among them.

Rick, I know what you mean. The Borg creeped me out. They were intelligent, powerful zombies who were trying to absorb EVERYBODY! I think the best Borg episodes were part of STAR TREK: VOYAGER.

I tried a fe eps of Voyager, but didn’t care for it much. STNG is still my favorite, then DS9, then original. I guess the problem with the first series is that I watched it every week when each show was new, and by the time NG came around I’d had enough of the original characters. I really took to Picard, Data and Troy. Rikker and Warf not so much. I have considered buying the whole set on DVD, but I’d heard there are technical problems with the transfers.

The only STAR TREK series that I never really got into was DEEP SPACE NINE. If my public library buys the Blu-ray editions, I might try watching them over Summer vacation. I think many VOYAGER espisodes are underrated.

I liked Deep Space 9 much better than Voyager, though we watched them both. I’ve never been a great Kate Mulgrew fan, for one thing. I agree that Next Generation was the best.

Jeff, I watched DEEP SPACE NINE randomly. I liked the shape-shifter. Kate Mulgrew grew on me (forgive the pun) and her cast was very good especially Seven of NIne.
