STEVE MCQUEEN COLLECTION [Blu-ray]

The Steve McQueen Collection qualifies as “The Bargain of the Week.” I bought this box set at Wal-Mart for $14.96. There are FOUR Blu-ray movies in this collection: The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven, The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Sand Pebbles. Here are four great films for a little more than $3.50 per Blu-ray movie. Which of these classic movies is your favorite?

Todd, we have a new Wal-Mart in our neighborhood. Some of the kids in my community work there so I try to support them occasionally by buying something at Wal-Mart.

The Magnificent Seven, of course, followed by The Sand Pebbles. My third and fourth choices aren’t here, though: Bullit and The Getaway.

George, I haven’t seen many of his films though I have always liked McQueen as an actor. He is the kind who would make a good friend or partner, as we saw in THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and THE GREAT ESCAPE. I also liked his character and role in THE TOWERING INFERNO.

The Sand Pebbles is my favorite. Followed by Great Escape, Magnificent 7 and Thomas Crown. Like Cap’n Bob The Getaway and Bullit are probably better than Magnificent 7 and Thomas Crown. Have always liked The Cincinnati Kid also.

Jackie Kashian had an interesting observation about the remake–she felt a little uncomfortable during the sex scenes, as she had a sense she was actually looking into something rather like the Basinger/Baldwin actual bedroom. Conversely, the second time I saw the film, it was a few years after their ugly divorce, and I had a similar discomfort about the vicious argument scene between them. But there’s no lumps of misogyny in the remake to the degree that Peckinpah (surprise) brought to his version. Also, the cast is good in the McQueen version…but better in the later one.

Faye’s amazing costumes in TCA were designed by Theadora Van Runkle (a great name, but she started life as Dorothy Sweeney). She was also Faye’s personal designer for a while.

As with many others with the Y chromosome, I’d have to go with THE GREAT ESCAPE.

I watched BULLETT while dating my not-quite-yet wife. We were holding hands (“Aw…how sweet!”) when one scene startled her. She jumped and almost ripped my thumb off.

Jerry, I love your romantic story about BULLITT! I remember jumping a lot when I first watched BULLITT, too. It’s that kind of movie.

Any woman is going to pick the TCA. Oh, my. But my favorite was LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER. Cried me a river with that one.

THE GREAT ESCAPE and THE MAGNIFICENT 7…and BULLITT, of course.

I was a fan from his WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE days.

I think Steve McQueen’s Thomas Crown Affair is one of the sexiest movies ever!

And who doesn’t like The Great Escape?

Beth, I’m a big fan of both THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR and THE GREAT ESCAPE. Steve McQueen shows his versatility in both very different movies.
