SUPERGIRL, SEASON ONE PREMIERE (CBS)

So far, the Fall TV season has been disappointing when it comes to new shows. Diane and are watching Blindspot for its 24 elements. But so far, it’s mediocre. Tonight on CBS, the highly hyped Supergirl begins. The Flash and Arrow have modest audiences on the CW network. The same company that produces them is producing Supergirl. Will Supergirl draw a big enough audience on a major network like CBS? Will you be watching?

Not I, though I thought about it. I watched a little football and Linda watched one of those sappy movies she loves.

I’m going to give it whirl, George. ARROW has been a confusing mess from the beginning but I kind of like THE FLASH — meaning I’m not apt to throw my shoe at the screen. I hope SUPERGIRL will be a fun show and be neither twee or high concept.

Jackie is more interested in this than I am but we’ll record it and give it a try. We still haven’t caught up from our 11 days on the road – plus we recorded seven shows Sunday night – but should get to it this week. We’re still watching BLINDSPOT despite the plot holes and implausibilities. As someone pointed out, they are making it up as they go along, and with all her tattoos they can stretch it out as long as the ratings hold up. We’re also watching the even more implausible QUANTICO, which (yet again) is more Jackie’s taste than mine. In both of these shows there are almost no characters you can implicitly trust, which I suppose is the modern cynical way, but I prefer a hero you know is a hero.

    I miss Jack Bauer.

Jeff, most of my women students are very into the whole “lean in” movement. Mika has written a couple books about it and is conducting a tour with workshops to help women “realize their worth.”

I’m with Jeff, only I have no clue whatsoever what “lean in” even means. You say it’s politicalization? Women’s Rights? Gender bias? If that’s what SUPERGIRL is going to be about, I’ll skip it, but I probably would have anyway. It’s my birthday and I’ll bitch if I want to (apologies to Leslie Gore).

We’ll watch it based on the connection to THE FLASH, which I really like, and ARROW, which I also like but not as well since it’s taken them more than three seasons to start getting things right that THE FLASH nailed right away. All the political stuff I’ve read about SUPERGIRL makes me very leery of it. Won’t take much of that to run me off.

BLINDSPOT seems to have gotten dumber as the season goes on but is still watchable when the two leads are on-screen. The subplots with the other characters are pretty boring. QUANTICO got picked up for a full season, I think, so somebody must like it, but it seems really mediocre to me. Watchable, but barely, and I’m generally doing something else while it’s on.

Actually, more and more network series are making me miss PERRY MASON and GUNSMOKE and THE UNTOUCHABLES and . . . Oh, well, why go there?

They did just enough right on SUPERGIRL that I didn’t hate it, but it’s a close call. The reference to Otto Binder Bridge is enough to get me to watch again next week, but they lost points for mispronouncing the name, too.

I’m taping it Sat. Not sure whether I’ll go further with it. I’m surprisingly not interested in watching the How to get away with murders I’ve taped this season. I think its the flashbacks I’m getting tired of, which is a problem I have with Quantico. I thought I was done with Grey’s Anatomy, but am liking this season a lot. Tried 5 minutes of the new American Horror story, hotel, and that did it for me. I watched the one in NOLA with the witches.

Biggest season disappointment for me is the Graham Norton show on BBCA is just reruns. Biggest surprise was Grindr. Still liking Mysteries of Laura and Scandal, as well as Hawaii 5-0 and Big Bang Theory.

As to competition show, Face Off is my favorite. Cox Cable no longer shows Food Network on demand, so probably won’t keep up with some of those competition shows. I find it hard to believe that they are catering to people who are watching on phones, or other small devices. Am I wrong?
