THE BODYGUARD: THE MUSICAL

Deborah Cox lights up The Bodyguard: The Musical (aka, Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits) with her dance moves and strong voice. This is a musical version of the 1992 movie starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. A pop star, based on Whitney Houston, is being threatened and stalked by a psychopathic killer. A former Secret Service agent is hired to protect the pop star. That’s pretty much the plot. This musical version goes from song to song without much dialogue or plot. There’s just one scene where Deborah Cox and Judson Mills (who plays the bodyguard) get to interact: in a karaoke bar. Needless to say, it was my favorite scene in the whole production. If you like Whitney Houston’s hits, you’ll enjoy The Bodyguard: The Musical. Do you have a favorite Whitney Houston song? GRADE: B-

Houston had a great voice but her overwhelming ego and toxic personality made me avoid her music. The fact that she teamed up with Cosner (another actor I strongly dislike) made the movie a big, fat, overrated fiasco. So put me with Steve on passing on this one.

Jerry, I seem to remember a story in the UK where a guy destroyed an overhead speaker that was boadcasting “I Will Always Love You.” Some people have strong reactions to Whitney and her music.

Me three. And I couldn’t watch the movie either.

Favorite song? Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” though I prefer the Parton and Ronstadt versions.

Jeff, I think Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You” hit Number One. I do like the Parton and Ronstadt versions.

This is coming here. I can’t understand why they didn’t just make a bio of her life rather make a play of this mediocre movie. Apparently all the best minds are making TV shows now.

I think it was Elvis Costello(but I may be wrong) who said Houston didn’t sing a song so much as beat it to death.

I wanna Dance with Somebody and How Will I know are probably my favorites.

I like her music, but her personal life was cringe worthy

How Will I Know? is my favorite of her songs. I liked her peppy, wholesome late-1980s persona, before her diva behavior and downward spiral took over. Although I don’t find The Bodyguard as objectionable as some, I don’t see the reason for making a musical out of it. A musical based on Whitney’s life might be more interesting.

Deb, I agree. I was never a big fan of THE BODYGUARD but someone out there put up the money to turn it into a musical. Our show was packed with people.

Wolf, so many talented artists ended up crashing and burning. Whitney had a booming music career and a budding movie career. Then, it all slipped away…
