THE COMPLETE HENRY JAMES on iPad

Imagine: all 60 works of Henry James now reside on our iPad. Patrick is upgrading to the iPad2 so he gave us his “old” iPad. The first thing I wanted to do with the iPad was download a book from AMAZON. As Patti Abbott has pointed out on her blog, some of the ebooks are pricey. It took me a few minutes, but I finally found a bargain: The Complete Henry James for a mere $2.99. That’s about 4 million words. Patrick’s iPad has an app that converts Kindle files so the iPad can read them. My next step will be to actually read one of Henry James’ works on the iPad to see how that experience feels. But, I’m in the ebook world officially now.

Now you can read THE WINGS OF THE DOVE, THE ASPERN PAPERS, and THE SPOILS OF POYNTON (my three favorite James works) in the format they were meant to be read: Electronically.

I love the Large Font feature, Deb. Now all my ebooks will be Large Print books! I was thinking about starting with THE AMBASSADORS, a book I haven’t read since College. I love THE ASPERN PAPERS and THE SPOILS OF POYNTON! WASHINGTON SQUARE is right up there, too.

The mind boggles. Not at the fact that you now have an iPad but at the thought of all those Henry James novels being on it. Now the question is, do you have the New York Editions or the earlier ones?

I’ll have to root around and see which version of the Henry James novels came bundled together, Bill. Of course, several of these works never made it into the New York Edition.

Wow, nice. Does it have the short (so to speak) stories? The non fiction stuff on travel and other authors?

Truly it is unbelievable that his whole output is now free. Will be mean he is more widely read. I hope so. I say that having only read three of his least demanding books, of course.

Oh my. Another one goes e-book.

Since decent collections of the short stories are no longer in print, and unlikely to be now that this is available to the rich and tech-swooned, I guess the old copy I bought used with just some of them (stories, not e-book people) in it will have to do. I do understand your happiness with the ability to read larger text. Is the complete Joseph Conrad also available?

You can see why I was attracted to this COMPLETE HENRY JAMES, Rick. I have those Library of America volumes, but carrying all five with me would be a pain. Now I have 60 of Henry James’ works on one device. And when I read them, I just choose the font size I want (LARGE). Can’t do that with a book.

Patti, you can get all (or at least most) of James online for free. I’m working my way through the Library of America story collections (not online, but I’ve read some there).
