The screenplay to The Girl in the Cafe was written by Richard Curtis, the guy who wrote Love Actually (one of my favorite romantic comedies) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (another favorite). This love story involves Bill Nighy as a bland bureaucrat who meets the mysterious Gina (Kelly Macdonald). Suddenly, Nighy’s life is turned upside down (love will do that to you). The Girl in the Cafe is a clever and subtle movie with a political message. This movie never showed up in Western NY so I had to track down the DVD. It was well worth the effort. GRADE: A-
I’ve been meaning to give this a try…enough time has passed to make up for the pain of NOTTING HILL…
THE GIRL IN THE CAFE is no NOTTING HILL, Todd. You’ll enjoy it.
I saw it on TV, I think I like both of these actors and it had real substance.
I agree, Patti. Nighy and Macdonald are wonderful in this film.
Richard Curtis is also partly responsible for the hilarious BLACKADDER series starring Rowan Atkinson.
I didn’t know that, Deb. I have the complete BLACKADDER on order.
Jackie is a huge Bill Nighy fan (LOVE ACTUALLY was one of his greatest parts) and I love Kelly Macdonald’s Scottish accent. We saw this on HBO.
We love Black Adder too.
I’m with Jackie on Bill Nighy and you on Kelly Macdonald, Jeff. They are two talented actors.
I believe Ben Elton came on board BLACKADDER for the second series (the one set in Elizabethan England). Frankly, the first series (set in the Middle Ages) didn’t do much for me and I almost decided not to watch the rest of the programs; but I’m glad I did because the subsequent shows (set during the Renaissance, the Regency, and WWI) are fabulous.
I meant Richard Curtis. Ben Elton was with BLACKADDER from the beginning.
I’m looking forward to watching BLACKADDER during our long, snowy nights, Deb.
I like both of these actors and while the film is a little preachy, they are wonderful in their roles. I’d watch Bill Nighy read the proverbial phonebook.
Me, too, Ron. I think Bill Nighy is a vastly underrated actor.
