TINA [HBO Max]

Directed by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, this HBO documentary shows Tina Turner’s early fame while dealing with the Tina’s private torments chiefly her husband, Ike, physically abusing her. The incredible part of Tina’s story is her return to the world stage as a global phenomenon in the 1980s after struggling with multiple professional problems.

What I liked best about this documentary, was the inclusion of in-depth interviews with Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Kurt Loder, playwright Katori Hall, and Tina’s husband Erwin Bach. I’ve been a fan of Tina Turner’s music since the 1960s. I witnessed her amazing climb from obscurity in the 1970s to superstardom in the 1980s and beyond.

Never-before-seen footage and plenty of music segments make Tina a must-see event if you’re a fan. GRADE: A

She is a good singer but I’m not a big fan. I don’t dislike her. Always hated her version of Proud Mary.

I agree, they did a nice job with this. After watching it, Jackie ordered the 2 CD set Tina – ALL THE BEST on Sunday night, and we had it by 9 last night.

I’m just not a big enough Turner fan to watch this. I did start watching GENIUS: ARETHA and got bored with it. Hemingway has taken over my tv this week.

I thought it was very well done and I am not that much of a fan of her music. It was always too much about her shaking her well, you know.
    But Burns’ Hemingway is brilliant.

I enjoyed it, but was surprised at all the plastic surgery she’s had. I remember the movie with Bassett and enjoyed that as well. I enjoyed Aretha also. I’ve recorded Mahalia and Hemingway, but haven’t watched them

I commented above on my favorite rendition of Proud Mary Lip Sync Battle, with John Krasinski

Hope they’ll show this in Europe too.
I’ve been a big fan of Tina since the 60s – River deep mountain high (which she also wrote!) is still my favourite rock song.
When she came back in the 80s I was totally flabbergasted and then I read that she was coming to Frankfurt for a performance – there are many US soldiers around there.
I got tickets for my wife and me and it was phantastic!
When she started after maybe half an hour “Tonight” and after a minute David Bowie appeared the audience went crazy -us included.

I just remembered that there was a kind of biographical movie on her too – many years ago.
It showed not only her problems with her husband but also her cooperation with producer Phil Spector.

Wolf, there’s a lot more to Tina Turner’s story than just Ike. Her climb to stardom post-Ike is an incredible tale!

I like her music, but apparently not enough to buy it — as I’m pretty sure I don’t own any. But I do love — and I mean LOVE — River Deep Mountain High.
