Originally, there wasn’t supposed to be a Season Two of Under the Dome but when CBS saw the boffo ratings this summer mini-series generated, they wanted MORE! Under the Dome was supposed to be a 13-episode adaption of Stephen King’s 1000-page tome about a mysterious dome that traps a town and its residents. Stephen King wrote an open letter to fans (you can read it here) explaining the changes made to the TV series. Now, with CBS providing a second series of episodes scheduled to start in June 2014, the entire cast of characters and plot is up for grabs. Rumors abound that Stephen King will write one of next summer’s episodes. If you haven’t been watching Under the Dome it’s available at CBS ON DEMAND and the usual Internet sites. Diane and I have been mildly entertained, but this is not must-see TV.
The last part of your entry isn’t showing. But i’m glad my viewing was interrupted because i don’t like when the money people decide to extend something not meant to be. I’ve never known it to work out.
I watched the first episode but as soon as the idea of a boy torturing a girl arose, I bailed. I have had quite enough of that idea.
Randy, it was pure corporate greed that motivated CBS to extend UNDER THE DOME to a second summer. Ratings rule!
Patti, Diane was disturbed with several of the sub-plots involving women in UNDER THE DOME. More female characters have died than male characters (most violently).
We started out watching it and felt like you and Diane – it was OK but not great. When we lost CBS for a month we just didn’t bother picking it up again. This week Jackie tried three more episodes but was bored that they were all about Big Jim so quit watching. There was no one really to root for, even the nominal hero. And some characters (Junior, the teenagers) were so annoying that Jackie insisted on fast-forwarding through all their scenes.
It did make for some fast watching!
Jeff, we’ve invested 12 hours in UNDER THE DOME so we’re going to watch the Finale tonight. But I doubt if Diane will watch it next Summer.
Barbara watched just one episode and said it wasn’t very good, which may have meant uninteresting, poorly acted, or whatever as her “not very good” covers a range. I didn’t bother with it at all. They certainly shouldn’t have made a second season, but you’re right about ratings and greed.
Rick, the TV version of UNDER THE DOME has some of Stephen King’s plotting that keeps you watching (at least Diane and I are hooked). Of course, there wasn’t much to watch this Summer on network TV so UNDER THE DOME didn’t have much competition.
I read recently that UNDER THE DOME had been planned for a three-season arc from the beginning. I suspect this might have been contingency planning in case the series was actually renewed, but this might explain some of the slow-moving plot. It’s difficult to translate much of King’s work to any type of film without sucking the life out of it. Oh, well…like you and Diane, I’ll catch the season finale. I may even stick around of Season Two because of my “anything but reality shows” mantra.
Jerry, it’s going to be interesting to see how the producers of UNDER THE DOME extend the story over three summers because they’ve killed off so many main characters.
Joe is watching this and constantly comments on how it’s not following the book. I slept thru last night’s finale.
