WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, Season Two [FX]

Season Two of What We Do in the Shadows delivers more dark humor than the First Season. The premise is that a group of vampires resides in a house in Staten Island, New York. This American mockumentary comedy horror television series was created by Jemaine Clemen and features Nandor (a warrior vampire hundreds of years old), Laszlo, and Nadja (a romantically linked vampire couple); Colin Robinson, an energy vampire (who drains people of their energy instead of their blood); and Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar, who is secretly a Vampire Killer.

The fun of this series revolves around the vampires trying to adjust to contemporary society and technology. Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), assists the group in hopes Nandor (Kayvan Novak) will turn him into a vampire. Laszlo (Matt Berry) and Nadja (Natasia Charlotte Demetriou) provide romantic interests, but they also have roguish natures that take them into unusual situations. Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), the world’s most boring vampire, cunningly drains energy in many comic settings. I particularly enjoyed the episode where Colin tracks down an Internet troll.

Clearly, dark humor may not be the genre people want to indulge in during the Age of the Coronavirus. But, for something completely different and funny (at least to me), I recommend this quirky series. GRADE: A

Jackie doesn’t like it, but I get a kick out of it. Poor Guillermo will never get his heart’s desire to be a vampire, I fear. I also get a kick out of the Staten Island setting. I found it amusing when they thought they were invited to a Superb Owl (put them together) party. Only Colin Robinson is tedious, but that is his function in the show, and he has had a couple of good episodes, like the one where he was dating the energy-sucking complaining co-worker in Series One.

I’m also watching it. I liked the movie it was based on, but for some reason at the end of last season, I didn’t think I’d want to watch the second season. It was set to tape though and I watched the first show and liked it better. I agree about the Colin Robinson character being tedious. Nandor is my favorite character. I’ve also enjoyed some of the guest stars. It’s a sold B for me

I loved Clement’s “Flight of the Conchords” on HBO a few years ago, and this is a series I’ve been trying to get to since it started on FX. Now that it’s also on Hulu maybe I’ll finally do it. With all this streaming stuff the TBW stack has become a serious rival to the TBR stack.

I watched a few Season 1 episodes and enjoyed it. I’m trying to get Joe interested since he like vampire stuff.
    I’ve never seen the movie.

Beth, the movie version of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS seemed like a Rough Draft of the TV series to me. The movie shows up on streaming services and there it’s on DVD, too. Joe would love the loopy humor of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.

One of the creators is somehow involved in the movie JoJo Rabbit I haven’t seen that, but since I’ve started up netflix discs, its in the queue. Netflix is ridiculous in having to wait for movies that have been out on dvd for months, and adding a day to delivery. I’m on my free month for restarting, and will do another couple of months until I get caught up, maybe do streaming but that is almost impossible to fast fwd, so very frustrating.

Maggie, I totally agree with you on the frustrations of not being able to Fast Forward. Our ON DEMAND does not allow us to zip through commercials so we’re forced to endure them. That’s why I’d rather DRV a program so I can use Fast Forward.

Maggie, Taika Waititi co-wrote and co-directed WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (the movie) and played a role in one of the television episodes, as well as directing and writing JOJO RABBIT (which we saw in Florida) and playing an imaginary Adolf Hitler.

I would also definitely recommend you look for his HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, which he also wrote and directed, and which is the highest grossing New Zealand film ever.
