WHEN HARRY MET SALLY

It’s New Year’s Eve and our tradition for nearly 30 years is to watch When Harry Met Sally, Diane’s favorite movie. Diane and I saw When Harry Met Sally in 1989. This year’s watching will be most poignant with the recent tragic death of the director, Rob Reiner.

The clever screenplay was written by Nora Ephron. Starring Billy CrystalMeg RyanCarrie Fisher, and Bruno Kirby, When Harry Met Sally follows the title characters from the time they meet in Chicago and share a drive to New York City through 12 years of chance encounters in New York City which climaxes in a 1988 New Year’s Eve party.

Rob Reiner had a different (not happy) ending planned for When Harry Met Sally, but Reiner–while directing When Harry Met Sally–was introduced to photographer Michele Singer. The meeting not only influenced Reiner’s decision to change the film’s conclusion to a happy ending, but resulted in Reiner and Singer’s marriage. How do you celebrate New Year’s Eve? GRADE: A

Jerry, it’s snowing in Western NY now. South of Buffalo, the weather-guessers predict over a foot of snow today (the ski resorts are ecstatic!) while the towns north of Buffalo–that’s us–will get five inches of snow today. Temps are in the teens. Brrrrrr!

Our usual: cheese fondue first (with crusty bread, sausage, and various veggies for dipping), then chocolate fondue (with pound cake and fruit for dipping). We’ll be watching the latest Knives Out movie (“Wake Up, Dead Man”) and will probably manage to squeeze in some time to watch an old NYE favorite, “Blackadder Back & Forth”, until the ball drops and we toast the New Year with a bottle of Asti at midnight. Tomorrow, I will spend the day taking down and boxing up our Christmas decorations so that all will be back to normal by the weekend.

Deb, we’ll be toasting Asti, too, at midnight. As far as our Christmas Tree is concerned, Diane would keep it up all year long…if she could get away with it. We’ll be taking the tree down around MLK Day. You and John will enjoy “Wake Up Dead Man” with its Locked Room lecture.

    You’re right, you’re right, I know you’re right.

(For those who haven’t seen it, that’s a WHEN HARRY reference. )

We no longer have (we did when we were first married) or go to parties on NYE. We’ve been in L.A. and the Bay Area and Phoenix visiting family in other years. We’ve been to the theater, to movies ( many times), and a great concert (Jimmy Buffett and Huey Lewis at Barclays), and even stood in Times Square to watch the ball drop once (after the theater).

But now we’re old. We either go out for lunch (as we are today) or bring food in (if the weather is awful), and always watch TWO FOR THE ROAD and WHEN HARRY MET SALLY…(Diane has good taste).

We no longer stay up to watch the ball drop.

    Happy New Year everyone.

Jeff, Diane and I went to lunch at one of the few local restaurants serving Lunch today. Most local restaurants open at 4 P.M. on New Year’s Eve and stay open ofter midnight. It’s snowing here right now so the roads are going to be slick this evening. Snow and liquor don’t mix!

I agree. I went to my car guy at 9:15 this morning to make sure everything was OK before we go to Florida and discovered that NYE is, apparently, a great time to do this! Unlike the usual visit, the place was very quiet and I was done in 45 minutes.

We went to a local Chinese restaurant for lunch (luckily, Jackie had made a reservation, as it was pretty busy). Then we picked up a piece of tiramisu cheesecake for dessert, and came home.

Jeff, Diane and I are still eating desserts from our Thanksgiving feast. Patrick and Katie made SEVEN different kinds of cookies! We sent most of them home with our guests, but Diane is still nibbling on the cutout cookies she loves. I finished the chocolate cream pie today. Only one more piece of apple pie remains.

We stayed in. It poured rain most of the night. Also very loud fireworks until very late. Larry’s on the board of a local recreation area and umpires little league, so we often go up to the field with Blondie ( and Moon before she passed away in Oct,). Blondie used to bring back the balls Larry hit off a stand, but she stopped about a year ago. Moon would occasionally bring some back, but usually only half way. We’re not going to be able to go today. But hopefully tomorrow. I’ve been picking dandelions from the field.

I’m making chili tonight. I found a recipe in a mystery novel that was so interesting, using cinnamon. I add rehydrated dried cherries and it’s really good.

Have a happy healthy new year
