WHY I’M NOT WATCHING GOTHAM ANYMORE

Dull, dull, dull. I had high hopes for Gotham, the Batman prequel on FOX. But after four sluggish episodes I’m bailing out. Gotham is a corrupt city. James Gordon is the only honest cop on the Gotham police force. Bruce Wayne is a 12-year-old kid. Catwoman is a 13-year-old living on the streets. The Penguin is washing dishes in a gangster’s restaurant. This is not quite what I expected. Are you still watching Gotham? What programs from this new season have you given up on?

George, this hasn’t come to my neck of the woods but from your review I’m not inclined to watch it even if it does. I’m assuming Bruce Wayne grows up to be Batman in successive episodes or have they simply done away with the caped crusader?

I may stick around a bit longer. We’ll see. Scorpion has been so-so and I haven’t decided whether to bail(leaning that way though). The Transporter, though i don’t think it’s new, I quit in the middle of the first episode I watched.

Haven’t seen but a couple of the new ones and enjoyed them. STALKER has me interested. That Dylan McDermott’s character is a borderline stalker himself is a nice touch.

The only new shows I am watching are THE AFFAIR and perhaps PEAKY BLINDERS if it doesn’t get too violent. I have pretty much given up on all network shows except for THE GOOD WIFE. Even BIG BANG seems tired now. I tried Gotham once and it didn’t work for me.

Patti, I’m finding the new season of BIG BANG tired, too. Diane watches THE GOOD WIFE. She’s watching some of the new comedies. I think the “new” TV season has been a bust.

THE AFFAIR is off to an overblown start (judging by the pilot, haven’t watched last night’s yet)…RASHOMON is not a new concept, and I’d certainly like it to have considerably more heft than it has so far. Amusing that the Brits pretending to be Yanks are the trysting spouses…they see the hidden Albion in each other.

MADAME SECRETARY not terrible, but not superb. MARRY ME has clever touches but keeps trying to be Just Another Sitcom. I will definitely catch the next season of YOU’RE THE WORST, a late-summer series.; the similarly non-superb, but interesting enough MANHATTAN will also get my attention for at least the beginning of the second season…RAY DONOVAN improved with its second season.

Todd, I agree with you on RAY DONOVAN (now featured in some Verizon commercials). But too many “new” series sink in Season Two.

The networks are in trouble because they just don’t have the latitude for more R-rated fare or for short series. 22 episodes of good TV is too difficult now.

Patti, you’re right. The formats aren’t flexible for older viewers. Younger viewers, like my students, have very little interest in network or cable TV. They’re addicted to YouTube and Netflix.

Gave up on GOTHAM after two episodes. I’m still fifty-fifty on THE FLASH but finding enough stuff I like to keep me watching for a while. And it’s the best of the new shows we’ve tried…

James, I totally agree. I kept hoping GOTHAM would get better (it didn’t). THE FLASH is a little too soapy for my tastes, but I’ll stick with it a little longer. I wish THE FLASH would bring out villains like THE TRICKSTER. That’s what I loved when I read the comic as a kid.

Seems to me reality shows like So You Can Dance and The Voice and similar crap have about taken over the before 10:00 slots. Barbara is still enjoying GRIMM and BLACKLIST, but tried MADAM SECRETARY and thought it was just OK.

Rick, SO YOU CAN DANCE and THE VOICE are inexpensive programs to produce. Very cost effective. Good dramas are expensive and that’s why we have so few.

Still watching Gotham, but disappointed so far. Boardwalk Empire is ending next week. Not a perfect show but better than most anything else going on. Homeland went downhill last season but seems much improved this year. Have to give Constantine a look next week. Didn’t get past the first 30 minutes of The Flash.
Unfortuately no new episodes of Justified, True Detective or Game of Thrones till next year.

This was never for us. The most pathetic thing was this morning. The local Fox anchor woman, instructed to push the show, was claiming (in a desperate attempt to be young and “hip”) that she loves the show and especially the girl who plays the young Catwoman (an upcoming guest), though she had no idea of how to pronounce her name. Pathetic.

Even Jackie, the television addict, is finding it hard to pick new shows to get interested in. We do watch MADAM SECRETARY, which is not great but not as bad as I feared. She watches SCORPION; I gave up after the first episode. She likes RED BAND SOCIETY but then, anything medical appeals to her. I think STALKER and Dylan McDermott are a perfect sick fit with the hideous CRIMINAL MINDS. CBS should be ashamed of themselves.

We watched THE AFFAIR because of the cast but I hope it improves, quickly.

Jeff, I’m down to THE FLASH for new snows. Diane is watching some of the new comedies (she likes JANE THE VIRGIN), but this TV season is way below mediocre.
