WORLD CUP FINAL

germany
argentina
I am the most casual of causal soccer fans so my opinion is shallow and weak. But I’m picking Germany to win the World Cup. Diane and I watched parts of the World Cup games–mostly the U.S. games–but I’ve been impressed by Germany from the start of World Cup play. I wouldn’t bet the house, but I have a Good Feeling that Germany will win this game. Who are you rooting for?

George, I’d root for Germany too if I watched the World Cup tonight. I didn’t see a single game owing to the time which is past midnight, IST. A good book or sleep sounded a lot better to me.

Definitely Germany. I just hope Argentina doesn’t play another snorefest like they did in the semi-finals. They may think playing for a 0-0 bore in hopes of a penalty kick win is good strategy but they are alienating fans by the millions. I won’t be watching.

Patti, I remember when we were going out I took Jackie to a hockey game at the old (well, the third) Madison Square Garden (the one on 8 Avenue & 49 Street). She found it impossible to follow the puck.

Jeff, when NBC started broadcasting National Hockey League games, they “enhanced” the puck with a visual glow so it would be easier to follow. But there were complaints from purists so that visual aid was dispensed with.

Yawn. I’m with Prashant, a good book is a better choice. We’ve been watching the Tour de France every morning (it comes on at 5 am here).

Update: I’m feeling marginally better, the new meds seem to be helping. The bloody heat wave here (90s, 90s, and up) is hard on me, I dislike heat and with the medical stuff I’m staying inside with the air conditioning running. I’m not able to do much reading as my vision is still wiggly, the words tend to dance on the page. The South Beach diet, Phase One, which is very strict, has resulted in a 7 pound weight GAIN in the first 10 days, which is confounding. There is simply no explanation. So I just slog on with it and hope I’ll start losing soon. I’m hoping to feel better in a few weeks and get back on the netwaves.

I’m not a fan of the sport, either, but I might watch the championship game anyway. Germany-Argentina? In theory, all the players could be German without importing any foreigners.

Bob, a billion people are supposed to be watching the World Cup Final. I’ll watch some of it, but with a book in my lap.

My wife has an uncle who became a German citizen, so we are rooting for Germany. Besides, they are more team oriented, which I like. After over 40 years, I am finally starting to make sense of soccer, er… futbol.

Well, you picked it, George, thanks to a couple of gimmies the Argentines missed. I figured it would end 0-0 in regulation ad Argentine would win in a shootout. Little did I know they’d play another six hours, or whatever it was.

Bob, I still don’t understand the rules for “extra time” and “overtime.” Like you, I thought the game would go to a shootout.

That is obviously what Argentina was planning on, as in the semis over the Dutch. Extra time is half an hour, not sudden death, even if one team scores immediately.

Rick, I simply don’t see how it is possible to gain seven pounds on the strictest form of South Beach. If you’re following it correctly, which I assume you are, there is something wrong somewhere.

Jeff, I know it seems impossible, but it happened. I DID NOT cheat on a single bite, followed the menus, did everything the book said. I had lost a pound each of the previous two weeks (on Weight Watchers). So I was floored by the gain. Tomorrow is the weigh-in for the end of the two week period. I have I have at least lost some of what I gained. I’ll have to stay on Phase One at least another week.

UPDATE – I finished the two week South Beach Diet Phase One today. Total weight change: + 4.8. I really expected to lose. I’m really, really bummed out.
