YO, KATIE!

Katie was visiting Patrick in New York City. Patrick is part of a 6-week conference at New York University on Privacy & Security. Katie took the train down from Boston and spent some time with her brother. They saw Cats on Broadway and did some sight-seeing. Here is one of the new NY sculptures. Very cool! Here’s an explanation of what you’re seeing:

“These days Deborah Kass is known for her giant, yellow — and very Instagrammable — OY/YO sculpture on the waterfront in New York’s Brooklyn Bridge Park. About 8 feet tall and 17 feet long, the aluminum sculpture consists of two perfectly proportioned letters, “O” and “Y.” The piece reads as “OY” if you are viewing it from Brooklyn and as “YO” if you are looking across the river from Manhattan. It’s two simple letters, but packed into them is a commentary on linguistics, gentrification, and the power of social media. In a little over six months, it’s become part of the New York skyline.”

Very cool. Brooklyn Bridge Park is perfect for Katie and Patrick’s age group. We feel extremely old over there. They have done a great job revitalizing the waterfront area over there. It is right down the road from the famous Brooklyn Heights Promenade overlooking lower Manhattan.

Incidentally, for those who don’t know, that is the Manhattan Bridge in the picture. The Brooklyn Bridge is stone. They are very close together at the Brooklyn end, obviously. Behind them is the artist-friendly area called DUMBO (for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass).

Beth, Patrick and Katie are closer now than when they were teenagers and moved in different circles. Diane deserves all the credit for Patrick and Katie’s Goodness!

Rick, Patrick was interested in the Summer conference because of its focus on Privacy and Security issues. Patrick just returned from a hackers’s convention in Vegas where he was invited to speak. The kid gets around!

    Congratulations on your young ones!

That picture and the story brought fond memories:

When I tol my partner to NYC and Niagara Falls some years ago, on our second weekend we stayed in Manhattan in a nice lttle hotel neat the East river (Eurostars on Front St near Wall St – probably much more expensive during weekdays …) – not far from the Sea Port and Brooklyn Bridge and went walking there …
And on our last day we drove our car over the Brooklyn Bridge and then via Verrazano Bridge back to Newark airport, staying for an hour on Staten Island Beach …

Nice, Wolf. We live right on Shore Road, a mile from the Verrazano.

We love Niagara Falls. I could stand there watching the water pour over the Canadian Falls for hours.

But we were there in March – and the falls were frozen … 😉

Of course some water came down and in the evening those 100m long “icecones” and the lighting was spectacular – we would watch it directly from our room at the Sheraton Fallsview – unbelievable!
We could even open the window a little bit (not too much – we were on the 18th floor) to listen to the Falls too – being warmed by the gas heated fireplace in our room …

I haave to say we were generall lucky on all our holidays in the USA, met friendly people, had good weather, no problems at all and:

Did a lot of shopping in the outlets all over, from Florida to Canada, bought clothes not only for us but for family and friends at unbelievable prices! 🙂

        PS:
Sorry, George, for taking over your blog again!

Wolf, feel free to comment as much as you want! You’re right about Niagara Falls looking differently in March than in August. Our Outlet Mall just added 46 new stores! Most of the licence plates on the cars in the parking lot are Canadian!
