Newsies is a musical version of the Disney movie from 1992. Jack Kelly (no relation) is a leader of a ragged group of boys who deliver newspapers in New York City. The story is set in 1899. Joseph Pulitzer cuts the amount of money the newsies will receive. This enrages Jack Kelly and he organizes a STRIKE. There’s a lot of singing and dancing in this high-energy production. The choreography is inventive and gymnastic. There’s a love story between Jack Kelly and a woman reporter. If you’re looking for an uptempo, energetic musical, Newsies fits the bill. GRADE: B
Had to be better than the football game, right?
Bill, the Bills played stupidly committing 17 penalties for 135 yards. No way you can win doing that. Yes, NEWSIES was much more entertaining than watching the Bill get caught for holding.
Crap. I forgot to type in the information above and it ate my comment, which was mostly expressing happiness that the hated Cowboys lost last night.
Jackie watched the Disney movie version of NEWSIES (starring Christian Bale) and I think I saw part of it, but we didn’t see the Disney musical version.
See you in Raleigh.
Jeff, we saw NEWSIES (the movie version) back in 1992 with Patrick and Katie. The play version is fun if you like plenty of dancing and singing. Have a safe trip!
It was also playing in Grand Rapids last week. They must have a lot of road shows going at once.
Patti, you’re right about multiple road shows of NEWSIES. The story of the poor kids battling against the Rich resonates like Bernie Sanders’s message.
I did that to protest having to type the stuff in, but of course it’s me, Rick R., or Richard R. or R.K. Robinson, or whatever I remember to type.
ANYWAY……… we’ll keep and eye out for this to hit Portland. Meanwhile, have a great time at Bouchercon! Hope the weather has dried up and is nice for you and everyone else who is going.
Alonzo…er, Rick: Patrick teaches all day today, but perhaps tomorrow he will address this annoying info loss problem. The Meyersons have left NYC and are driving to Raleigh. I’ll be flying out on Wednesday. I’m with you on the weather down there.
Beleieve it or not, a friend from school is in the chorus of the movie. What an extraordinary title to choose to turn into a stage property!
Sergio, the movie version of NEWSIES did well so Disney decided to transform it into another medium. They did it with THE LION KING, too.
