A dazzling Maureen O’Hara plays Kate Maxwell, saloon proprietress, in 1870s Wyoming. A battle is brewing between established ranchers and the wave of homesteaders. Kate Maxwell has some “history” with a promoter named Jim Averell (William Bishop) who fans the discontent of the homesteaders. But Sheriff Stan Blaine (Alex Nicol) attracts Kate’s keen interest as he investigates a rustling scheme.
I was impressed by Maureen O’Hara’s athleticism! She rides horses with her flowing dresses and streaming red hair! She fires her Winchester rifle with cool aplomb. I immediately wanted to watch another Maureen O’Hara movie. I had forgotten how much Star Power she had! Are you a Maureen O’Hara fan? Which of her films do you recommend? GRADE: B+
Can’t say I’m a big fan. This sounds pretty generic. And who the hell is Alex Nicol? His career apparently went nowhere.
Steve, any movie with Maureen O’Hara in it is not generic. Alex Nicol, on the other hand, is a generic Good Guy.
THE QUIET MAN, obviously, which was O’Hara’s favorite role. Also MIRACLE ON 34th STREET, THE BLACK SWAN, HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY.
O’Hara died three years ago at 95. Now that was a redhead!
Jeff, when I was planning REDHEAD WEEK, I knew Maureen O’Hara had to be part of it!
Haven’t seen those Westerns – but I remember her as Esmeralda in The Hunchback of notre Dame.
Wolf, Maureen O’Hara was a versatile actress.
Try FIRE OVER AFRICA and KANGAROO.
Dan, thanks for the recommendations! I’ll check Netflix, HULU, and Amazon Prime TV.
O’Hara hated KANGAROO. She said the director rewrote the script.
Jeff, I’ve never seen KANGAROO. I hate when the director tampers with the script. Ron Howard did that to SOLO and look how that turned out.
Not a big fan but I’ve liked O’Hara when I’ve seen her. Can’t think of any titles right now except “The Quiet Man”, which I didn’t much like. Seems like she was in one or two other movies with John Wayne. Her hair is definitely a plus, but you need color for that and much of her career was in B & W. When trying to find her movies you’ll probably have more luck with TCM than with the Big Three streaming services.
Michael, I’ll check the TCM schedule and DVR and Maureen O’Hara movies that sound interesting. You’re right about the need for color in the movie to really appreciate Maureen O’Hara’s red hair!
