FORGOTTEN MUSIC #80: BIGGEST HITS OF THE 80s (SONY A 54680)

Okay, there were more than 10 “hits” from the 1980s (and most of these songs are NOT the “Biggest Hits” hyped on the CD cover). But this SONY complication CD from 2002 collects enough good music to merit a post for FORGOTTEN MUSIC Thursday. My favorites are Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” and Luther Vandross’s “Stop to Love.” I remember the days when Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” was playing on the radio all the time. Do you remember these “hits” from the 1980s? What are your favorites? GRADE: B+
TRACK LIST:
1. “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” – WHAM! 3:50
2. “Sexual Healing” – MARVIN GAYE 4:00
3. “All Cried Out” – LISA LISA & CULT JAM WITH FULL FORCE 4:45
4. “Stop to Love” – LUTHER VANDROSS 5:10
5. “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” – MICHAEL BOLTON 4:14
6. “Footloose” – KENNY LOGGINS 3:47
7. “Easy Lover” – PHILIP BAILEY (DUET WITH PHIL COLLINS) 5:04
8. “Heaven” – WARRANT 3:56
9. “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” – CYNDI LAUPER 3:55
10. “This Could Be the Night” – LOVERBOY 4:56

Lot of crap on here. Wham, Kenny Loggins, Warrant, Wham, Michael Bolton, Wham, Loverboy, Wham. The only 2 I would listen to are the Marvin Gaye and Cyndi Lauper.

Steve, compilation CDs like BIGGEST HITS OF THE 80s were common 20 years ago. Now, BEST BUY doesn’t even sell music CDs any more!

I like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”—which was the anthem of my seven-years-younger sister in the 1980s—and “Easy Lover” by Phil & Philip. By this point in the eighties, I was mostly listening to (mostly British) New Wave: Duran Duran, the Smiths, Depeche Mode, REM, Tears for Fears, etc.

Now Philip Bailey, on the other hand, is still great. We”ve seen Earth, Wind & Fire half a dozen times and he sounds great.

If I were president, they would play “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” instead of “Hail to the Chief.”

That’s my platform, I hope I cam count on your vote in November.

For me the 80s music-wise were “Tote Hose” as we say in German (dead pants … 🙂 ) – ok, Marvin Gaye I could tolerate, but the others?
But that’s probably a general problem of my generation – the 60s had so much new stuff to offer, not only in music. And after that it all became routine or even worse just business – who cared for the artists?
“We’re only in it for the money” is still one of my favourite sayings.

There was A Lot of brilliant music in the 1980s. Where it rarely was, was on the top of the charts…a bit of that was wonderful. Not Too much of it here. Odd that Sony, which owned CBS by the time this CD was released, left all Michael Jackson out.

Todd, I have a number of SONY compilations from that era. None of them have Michael Jackson on them. I’m guessing it might have something to do with recording contracts.

In the 80’s I was listening to Springsteen, Petty, The Clash, Lou Reed, Talking Heads, New Order, etc. Most of my favorite 60’s bands had either broken up or their best days-at least on vinyl-were long gone-such as The Who and The Kinks. Hated hair metal even more than Disco. Some good indie bands were around such as Yo, Lo Tengo and Sonic Youth.

It reminds me of my kids being young teens so I am okay with it. Nostalgia goes a long way with me.

Patti, I remember when I played the radio all day long and listened to these songs in the Eighties. Now, I only listen to the radio when I’m driving around running errands.

Rick, the last Thursday of the month is FORGOTTEN MUSIC day. I don’t have much to say about the 2018 NFL Draft. The Buffalo Bills need to draft a franchise quarterback.

Rick, I think these QBs are over-hyped. The Bills may move up, but I don’t think they’re going to trade a lot of Draft picks to do it.
