This new 2-CD Expanded Edition of The Supremes’s chart-topping, The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland, present 52 songs that feature the scope of a seminal album that made history as the tenth studio album released by The Supremes for Motown in 1967. It includes the number-one hit singles “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” and “Love Is Here and Now You’re Gone.” As the title states: all songs on the album were written and produced by Motown’s main songwriting team of Holland–Dozier–Holland. Most of the album was recorded during the spring and summer of 1966; however several songs date back to the summer of 1964. The LP album sold over 1,525,000 copies world-wide at the time.
This set includes 28 tracks released for the first time including updated mixes & alternate versions, as well as a score of electrifying live performances captured at the Copacabana nightclub in New York City in May 1967. This is the last recorded performance of the original trio: Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. If you’re a fan of The Supremes, this is a must-buy. If you’re a casual fan of Holland/Dozier/Holland songs and The Supremes you’ll find plenty of great songs to listen to on this 2-CD set. Highly recommended! What’s your favorite song by The Supremes? Never much of a fan. They were my least favorite Motown group. Still, a lot of good stuff here. Could do without The Happening and some of the live Copa stuff. Thoroughly Modern Millie, Mame, Puy On a Happy Face?
Steve, I’m sure The Supremes were “encouraged” to sing some of those mainstream songs like “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Mame,” and “Put On a Happy Face” to appeal to a mainstream audience. It’s all about the money.
My favorite Diana Ross & the Supremes songs are “Reflections”, “Back in My Arms Again”, and “Love Is Like An Itching in My Heart”; but I also loved the first few songs the Supremes did after Diana Ross left: “Stone Love”, “Up the Ladder to the Roof”, and “Nathan Jones”.
Deb, you have excellent taste in Motown music! I’m fond of a dozen hits by the Sixties Supremes, but I keep coming back to “Come See About Me” on their WHERE DID LOVE GO album.
I had that original album! I remember the cover. I always thought – back in the day – that if they’d released “Going Down For the Third Time” as a single, it could have been as big a hit as any of their others.
I was a big fan of theirs. Favorites? “Reflections” (they wisely used this as the theme music of CHINA BEACH), “You Can’t Hurry Love” (my favorite at the time), “Stop! In the Name of Love.”
Jeff, I bought several albums by The Supremes, but missed this one back in the 1960s. But, I bought a lot of Motown!
Oh, I should mention that I also had their original SUPREMES LIVE AT THE COPA album, though I prefer the studio stuff.
Jeff, I’m with you on preferring studio albums over live albums.
Classic lyrics:
“Love is like an itching in my heart
And baby, I can’t scratch it.”
Jeff, how about:
I’ve been crying
‘Cause I’m lonely (for you)
Smiles have all turned to tears
But tears won’t wash away the fears
That you’re never ever gonna return
To ease the fire that within me burns
If you’re ill, take a pill,
If you’re thirsty, drink your fill.
But what you gonna do (oh yeah)
When love gets a hold,
A hold on you.
Love is like an itching in my heart
And baby, I can’t scratch it.
Jeff, classic!
I had a bunch of 45s back in high school. I prefer my pop music albums without a bunch of retakes and alternate versions, which is just filler. For the Supremes, I have a greatest hits album, and that’s all I need.
Rick, I’m always curious about the evolution of songs so I find listening to retakes and alternative versions instructive.
I liked the original group but once Diana Ross’s ego required its own zip code I lost interest.
Bob, plenty of lead singers have left their groups to pursue solo careers. You might be right about the ego-thing in Ross’s case.
My Favorites are #1, “I Hear A Symphony” because it builds to such a big finish and the sexiness of “Love Is Here.” It wasn’t quite the same after Diana Ross left.
Charlie, you’re right about the magic going away from THE SUPREMES when Diana Ross left. The winning chemistry was completely altered when that happened.
