HAPPY 71st BIRTHDAY TO ME!

So far, 71 feels fine. I’m celebrating with a Paula’s Donut and Paula’s wonderful coffee.

Later, the celebration will go on with my favorite pizza for dinner. Diane wanted to bake me a Birthday cake, but the temperatures today are supposed to reach 90 degrees! I’d rather not have the oven going in this kind of weather. In Normal Times, Diane and I would be going to a movie and then head to a swanky restaurant for dinner. But in the Coronavirus Era, a wonderful Paula’s Donut and a yummy pizza will have to do.

    I wish you and your wife many more wonderful years together – and of course your family and friends too.
    If I were (much …) younger there might have been a chance of us meeting at a Con one day but at 77 I’m just too old to fly long distance.

      Deb, we’re going to feel the effects of the remnants Tropical Storm Cristobal today and tomorrow. Today, we’re going to heat up to around 90 degrees. Tomorrow will be just as hot, but with added humidity, storms, and possible hail.

      Jerry, I’m very happy to make it to 71. My health is good and I’m loving this Stay-At-Home lifestyle. I’m getting so much reading done!

      Michael, the Kelley Collection actually has many books NOT in the Library of Congress. The SUNY at Buffalo librarians crow about the unique books and magazines they preserve and protect that the Library of Congress doesn’t have.

        The LOC doesn’t have A Whole Lot. I’m not sure how the culling has been decided over the decades, despite it being the largest single library in the world.

        Rick, after the Birthday pizza, Diane and I will take a walk (with masks and social distancing) around our neighborhood to burn off some of those carbs.

      Patti, the big different between this Birthday and most of my previous Birthdays is that Diane and I will stay home instead of painting the town red!

      Rick, my go-to pizza is GOOD GUYS cheese, onions, and hot peppers. Diane considers it radioactive so I order her a spinach pizza.

        So no meats?? We get the Pappa Murphy’s combo, which has both pepperoni and sausage, along with the green peppers, onion and plenty of cheese.

        Rick, I eat meat about once a week. I’ve read too much about Fatty Liver Syndrome to indulge in much red meat.

      Rick, the photographer for SUNY at Buffalo had me pose in one of the aisles of THE KELLEY COLLECTION holding various magazines and books. The first is NEW WORLDS with that iconic cover. The second (which you really can’t see) is an issue from the 19450s of ASTOUNDING. The third is BLOOD SUGAR, the recent STARK HOUSE novel. And the last is a copy of AMAZING from the early 1950s. The photographer picked the material for me to hold.

      That’s the nice thing about Pizza – everybody can choose his favourite toppings. My wife eg is a big fan of Pizza Hawaii while I prefer cheeses with some bacon or ham and olives of course.

      Todd, the top one was taken by a professional photographer in the bowels of the SUNY at Buffalo Special Collections Archive where most of THE KELLEY COLLECTION resides. The other photo was taken by Diane with her iPhone.

        Todd, I occasionally find copies of THE SAINT MYSTERY/DETECTIVE MAGAZINE but they’re getting scarce.

    Donuts and pizza have been on my no-eat list for some time now. My celebratory food cheat has been a small bag of potato chips, duly consumed on Jan. 3.

    I think it says something about me that the picture of you in the hall of printed delights makes me salivate much more than the donut picture, and I like donuts.

      Carl, I’m thrilled by all the preservation and organization SUNY at Buffalo provides for The Kelley Collection. With their care, those books that I donated should last a 100 years!
