LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

Love and Friendship is based on a Jane Austen novella–“Lady Susan”–and stars the fetching Kate Beckinsale in the leading role. Lady Susan has a “reputation” that borders on scandalous. Lady Susan Venron focuses on marrying off her daughter, Frederica (Morfydd Clark), and avoiding the social sanctions of her enemies. I was surprised at the humor in this film. Kate Beckinsale is having a lot of fun with all the machinations and schemes she unleashes on her family and “friends.” I thoroughly enjoyed Love and Friendship and so will you. GRADE: A-

Looks like a chick flick but more entertaining than modern ones. At least Kate Beckinsale got a decent role, rather than the violent crap she does so often.

Jeff, I’m sure Kate’s paycheck for LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP wasn’t in the same league as the vampire movies she’s done. She’s terrific in this one!

Kate B. was on Graham Norton this week, and was very funny. This will be a netflix for me. I think my next “in theater” movie will be Tarzan.

Getting a new DVR today, a contour. I’ll be able to record 6 at a time, which I can’t see ever needing to do. I’ll be able to store a lot more.

It’s very sad, I had a lot of really funny shows I was saving, and have to give them up as the shows can’t transfer to the new machine. Most are Graham Norton’s with Emma Thompson and Carsons with Burt Reynolds, Robin Williams and Jonathon Winters. I also taped just the final chase scene from the Lone Ranger. I think that is one of the best examples of movie music working with the action of the movie

Well, Beckinsale first got international attention in earlier Stillman-directed films…as opposed to the Underworld films directed or produced by her husband…

Her father, Richard Beckinsale, made his mark in TV hits including Porridge (with Ronnie Barker) and Rising Damp (with Leonard Rossiter) before dying suddenly of a heart attack at 31. I never saw his first hit show, The Lovers.

This is being marketed as a comedy, so I’m surprised you were surprised at the humor. Not my thing, and Barbara said “maybe “.

I bought the three movie set of the extended edition of the Hobbit yesterday. I’ve held off until this, haven’t seen any of them. So many hours of watching in store.

Rick, I’ve read a lot of Jane Austen but very little of her work is “funny.” I’ve ordered a copy of LADY SUSAN from AMAZON so I can see for myself where the film amped up the humor.

I will have to rent this to watch with my grandma once it is out of the theatres. She is a big fan of Jane Austen.
