Magic in the Moonlight is a low-wattage Woody Allen movie. Colin Firth plays a magician who is called in to expose a medium (played by Emma Stone) who is engaged to a wealthy young man who worships her (and serenades her with a ukulele). The views of southern France are gorgeous. The antique cars are spectacular. You’ll find few surprises in this movie. GRADE: B-
Oh damn – I love Allen in good form but this sounds a bit too much like a pastiche of his movies than the real thing. At least there will be another one really soon and I suppose after BLUE JASMINE, which i thought was amazing, the desire was to make something much lighter.
Sergio, I enjoyed MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT. But it is minor Woody Allen.
This got mediocre reviews so we’ll wait until it’s on DVD.
Jeff, there’s no need to hurry to see MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT. It’s pleasant, but not much more.
This will probably take forever to get to a theater near me.
I’ve enjoyed several of Woody’s recent movies so I’ll try this one too.
Beth, I was a big fan of BLUE JASMINE last year. MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT isn’t in that class.
What? No post on the Emmys? I thought you’d give us your thoughts on both the broadcast and the winners & losers. One award went to one show I’ve actually watched! As for the show itself, I found it unwatchable; lousy jokes, often in poor taste, terrible speeches, comedy attempts where none was wanted and more. I left the room after the first 45 minutes and am surprised I lasted that long. So much easier to just read the results in the morning newspaper.
Rick, for all the reasons you list I didn’t watch much of the EMMYS. I’m not a fan of award shows. Like you, I can check the results the morning after…and forget about it.
As for the film you post on today, I don’t do Woody Allen, so naturally this will be a skip for me.
Not that I have anything against him personally, I just never seem to enjoy his films.
Rick, I’m convinced that Woody Allen movies are an acquired taste. But, as Patti pointed out, his best work was done decades ago.
Have just watched MANHATTAN and HANNA and it’s been a long time since he made a movie that good.
Patti, you’re right: Woody hit it out of the park in the Seventies and Eighties. Since then, the movies are uneven. For every BLUE JASMINE there’s a MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT.
I would not watch the Emmys and after seeing who won, I’m glad I didn’t.
Jeff, the EMMYS were totally predictable. Sadly, the OSCARS are going that way, too, but with longer speeches.
