MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT

Magic in the Moonlight is a low-wattage Woody Allen movie. Colin Firth plays a magician who is called in to expose a medium (played by Emma Stone) who is engaged to a wealthy young man who worships her (and serenades her with a ukulele). The views of southern France are gorgeous. The antique cars are spectacular. You’ll find few surprises in this movie. GRADE: B-

Oh damn – I love Allen in good form but this sounds a bit too much like a pastiche of his movies than the real thing. At least there will be another one really soon and I suppose after BLUE JASMINE, which i thought was amazing, the desire was to make something much lighter.

This will probably take forever to get to a theater near me.

I’ve enjoyed several of Woody’s recent movies so I’ll try this one too.

What? No post on the Emmys? I thought you’d give us your thoughts on both the broadcast and the winners & losers. One award went to one show I’ve actually watched! As for the show itself, I found it unwatchable; lousy jokes, often in poor taste, terrible speeches, comedy attempts where none was wanted and more. I left the room after the first 45 minutes and am surprised I lasted that long. So much easier to just read the results in the morning newspaper.

Rick, for all the reasons you list I didn’t watch much of the EMMYS. I’m not a fan of award shows. Like you, I can check the results the morning after…and forget about it.

Rick, I’m convinced that Woody Allen movies are an acquired taste. But, as Patti pointed out, his best work was done decades ago.

Patti, you’re right: Woody hit it out of the park in the Seventies and Eighties. Since then, the movies are uneven. For every BLUE JASMINE there’s a MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT.
