MATCHBOX (Apple TV+)

A movie about Mattel toys might struggle to attract an adult audience although John Cena and Jessica Biel try their best. Director Sam Hargrave attempts to give Matchbox: The Movie a Fast and Furious vibe but it’s a stretch when the movie is basically a commercial for toy cars.

Matchbox: The Movie is John Cena’s 19th film in the last five years. Busy actor! On the other hand Jessica Biel appears in her first film role in almost a decade, I did NOT find Biel convincing as a hot-rod nut or as a daredevil driver,

Maybe I’m just not in the Target Market for a hybrid film like this. GRADE: C

    Ya think?

Jackie is frequently amazed at some of the stuff you watch, and I’m sure Matchbox will be no exception.

Jessica Biel did a nice job in series 1 of THE SINNER.

Jackie says if you want action movies, you should watch the French movies LOST BULLET, SECOND BULLET (or BULLET 2) and LAST BULLET on Netflix. And his new series starts with AKA.

LOST BULLET 2 was the second movie.

They all star Albin Lenoir (who was a stuntman on TAKEN and other films), as does AKA (2023).

I was a Matchbox kid in the late sixties and even tracked down some of my favorite vehicles from back then on ebay a few years ago. I wouldn’t touch this movie with a ten-foot pole. It amazes me how the bulk of streaming movies these days are more forgettable (and obnoxious) than your average television commercial.
Isn’t Biel one of those antivaxers “celebrities “?

Byron, clearly the success of BARBIE convinced Mattel to invest in movies that celebrate their various toy lines. Matchbox fans might enjoy this goofy movie, but the casual viewer will be mystified.

Byron, Biel did support one particular anti-vax bill, but generally believes in the value of vaccines.

George, I have to think that John Cena’s manager or agent is a whiz at scheduling to be able to fit him into so many projects a year. He’s an amiable screen presence who is easy to watch. (I’ve no interest in watching this one, though.)

I never got into Matchbox cars, but I had a couple of Dinky vehicles my father brought me from Scotland when I was a mere tadpole! If you’re keeping score, I made another $400 at the Queen today!
