PROMETHEUS in 3D

I had moments of deja-vu while watching Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Prometheus is a prequel to Alien (1979), and like Alien the focus is on a feisty woman character. In Alien it was Sigourney Weaver and in Prometheus it’s Noomi Rapace (from the Swedish Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movies). Noomi plays an archeologist who believes she’s found evidence that life on Earth originated and was “engineered” by advanced beings from another planet. She convinces one of the Koch brothers to spend a trillion dollars on a mission to a moon that may hold the answers. And, like Alien, the crew violates every safety protocol. And, there’s a treacherous android. As you might expect, this is a visual feast. I enjoyed the 3D effects. Prometheus will be one of the summer’s blockbusters. That’s what I wanted to know too, George. We’re planning on seeing it soon and need to know if 3D is necessary. I don’t think it was in MEN IN BLACK 3.

George, thanks for the Rothwell piece. I’m somewhat ambivalent about a film that depends on the stupidity and unprofessionalism of the main characters to move its plot forward. But Scott does know how to make his work visually interesting.

Looking forward to this one, even more so after all the good and bad things I’ve heard about it this weekend. I stayed away from spoilers, but wow! Some loved it, others are raging with barely-contained hatred.

PROMETHEUS is shaping up to be a polarizing movie, Carl. I respect the visual aspects of the film, but some of the plot and characters have me scratching my head!

George, thanks for the Cavalorn piece. It was interesting, but left me unsure about PROMETHEUS. The film seems half thoughtful metaphysics, and half (ha ha) Erich Von Daniken.

Glad you liked the Cavalorn review of PROMETHEUS, Drongo. Both the Rothwell and Cavalorn reviews point out the strengths and weaknesses of PROMETHEUS. I enjoyed PROMETHEUS, but it’s certainly a flawed film.
