RANDY NEWMAN: LIVE IN LONDON (CD/DVD)

I’ve been a fan of Randy Newman’s music for decades. Newman has focused more on writing soundtracks in the last decade. But listening to these great songs reminds me that Randy Newman is a gifted song-writer. This London concert took place in 2008. Newman is backed up by the BBC Concert Orchestra. The sound is pristine! If you’re a Randy Newman fan, you’ll love this. I’ve included a video of Norah Jones singing one of my favorite Randy Newman songs below. GRADE: A

Love it, love it, love it.

Judy Colllins also does a lovely version of “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today.” As someone who lives on the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, my favorite Randy Newman is “Louisiana 1927” based on the true story of how the levees in Plaquemines parish were blown up to protect New Orleans (but not the people in Plaquemines) in 1927. When my youngest kids were in kindergarten, they sang that song in a History of Louisiana concert at school.

I love the Judy Collins version of “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today,” too, Deb. But I figured most people have heard the Judy Collins version, but not the Norah Jones. Both are great! I’ll have to listen to “Louisiana 1927” again more carefully.
