AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Just about every MARVEL superhero has at least a cameo in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. A powerful alien called Thanos is determined to possess all of the Infinity Stones (elements of the beginning of the Universe) that would grant him unstoppable powers. Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Spiderman, Thor, Hunk, Black Panther, and a dozen other MARVEL characters try to prevent Thanos from acquiring the Infinity Stones. Many battles result. If you’re a fan of superhero movies, you’ll love AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. If you’re in the mood for an action movie, this one delivers. GRADE: A

I’m not a fan of superhero movies but I’ll probably see this after the crowds die down. Didn’t see Black Panther until last Thursday. I would think trying to cram all those characters into one movie would make it seem cluttered.

Steve, one review likened AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR to an “overstuffed sausage.” But, if you like this kind of superhero movie, excess just makes it better!

I agree that I prefer the individual movies – IRON MAN, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, BLACK PANTHER – to the conglomeration of everyone that some of the Avengers movies turn into, especially in the big fight scenes. But like Steve, we’ll see this when the first crowds die down, at a matinee when the kids are in school.

I am following the advice of a local review. This is not the time to step into this world for the first time. If you can’t ID the characters on the poster, don’t go. And I can’T.

Patti, the first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie might (maybe) be more to your taste. It was fun with a great sense of humor and ’60s/’70s music.

Jeff, I agree. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was a surprise hit because of its humor and style. I wasn’t so fond of the second GUARDIANS movies.

We tried to watch one of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (don’t remember which one) on tv but got so bored – after less than 10 min we switched channels, not our cup of tea!
And other “comics” movies we didn’teven start – can’t help it.Even Avatar didn’t make it for us – too predictable and Kitschy …

Wolf, you might like AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Wall-to-wall action! It’s like an opera with all the bombast and spectacle.

I used to follow the Avengers in the comics, back when, and may even have the Infinity Wars graphic novel, but like Patti, I can’t ID half the characters in that poster. The only two superhero movies I’ve seen are the first two Iron Man ones, so I’m years behind, and that’s okay.

On top of her second root canal in 4 days yesterday, our TV died about halfway through the NFL draft. The idea of researching TVs, with all the specs and features they now have, and trying to set up wi-fi and redefine our router and install the stuff is overwhelming. I’d almost say the heck with it, we don’t need a TV, but Barbara disagrees. Bah.

I agree about Guardians of the Galaxy, loved it. I also enjoyed the early Iron Man ones. I wish I’d been able to get to Black Panther at the theater, but was too busy.

Rick, I’m techno challenged, and have had (mostly) good luck with the geek squad. I wish I hadn’t just tossed a bunch of consumer reports, but I seem to remember Samsung and LG getting good grades on tvs

Maggie, I really liked the third IRON MAN movie. I hope MARVEL can talk Robert Downey, Jr. into making another one. I’d love to see him team up with Doctor Strange!

I feel Rick’s pain about the TV. Our Sony died in 2016 after eight years. The easy fixes described in the owner’s manual didn’t work. Turned out that it was a major malfunction in the basic system. The model was already obsolete at that point, and repairs either were impossible or would have cost as much as a new set. Our replacement Samsung is pretty good but with these new smart TVs, kiss that much more privacy goodbye. On second thought, these days, what privacy? I remember buying AVENGERS #1 at the newsstand and kept up pretty much through the first two-three years of Lee, Kirby, and Heck. There have been scores of membership changes since then, I imagine.

We disconnected our dead 42″ Panasonic and took it to an electronics recycling center. No muss, no fuss.
Then we went to Fry’s and looked at their selection, deciding on the Sony X800E, 49″ (the absolute max size our cabinet allows) 4K HDTV. It wasn’t too hard to set up, and I skipped the wi-fi options. Later if we decided to try streaming and such I can link it to my network. The picture is brighter and sharper than the old TV. Barbara is watching PBS Weekend News hour right now.

Bob, superhero groups are just a marketing ploy. So far, it’s working great! AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is bringing in millions of dollars!

    This is really big money!
    From my NYT newsletter:
“Avengers: Infinity War” scored the biggest global film opening of all time — an estimated $630 million — $380 million in 52 international markets and $250 million in the U.S.

A very intersting article on the movie:
        https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/may/01/avengers-infinity-war-hollywood-tv-box-sets

Viewed in a vacuum, Infinity War is meaningless. As a standalone film, it’s a mess. Characters pop up for one scene and then vanish again completely. Nobody has any meaningful screen time. The antagonist swans about with an entirely unearned sense of motivation. And there’s no emotional weight to the ending. It’s just a lot of stuff happening to people we’ve barely met.

But, with 10 years of context behind it, Infinity War is deeply impressive. We’ve watched these characters grow and change and their relationships evolve in several ways.

Wolf, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is just half a movie. We can’t really judge it until we see the second half in May 2019.
