It takes three “Chers” to tell the story of the real Cher. There’s a teenage Cher, a 20/30 year old Cher, and a “star” Cher. In chronological fashion, The Cher Show presents the story of how Cher met up with Sonny Bono and became a success, selling 50 million records. But, Sonny and Cher blew through all that money. When musical trends changed, Sonny and Cher were dropped by their record company and were broke. Sonny manages to sell the idea of The Sonny and Cher Show to CBS. The show ran from 1971 to 1974. Cher divorced Sonny and that pretty much cancelled the show. But, amazingly, Sonny and Cher reunited on TV in 1976 for a second iteration of The Sonny and Cher Show. But variety shows were going the way of the dinosaurs and the show was cancelled in 1977 because of low ratings. Cher then secures a recording contract and produces a series of hits during the 1980s and 1990s. Currently, Cher is touring the country with her Here We Go Again tour.
If you’re a Cher fan, you’ll enjoy this biographical musical. If you’re into female empowerment, The Cher Show is a perfect example of how determination and grit can produce success despite many setbacks. Do you have a favorite Cher song? GRADE: A

I pretty much detest her singing and such horrible hit recordings such as Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, If I Could Turn Back Time, and Half Breed. I’ll pass on this one.
Steve, all those songs got ovations from the audience in New York City.
No accounting for bad taste.
Steve, it just shows that Cher has a strong fan base.
Saw Cher in Vegas with Kathy. THAT was a show-and-a half!
Dan, I saw Cher’s show in Vegas, too. Marvelous!
Not a huge fan of her music, but I loved her in “Moonstruck.”
Deb, a lot of people forget Cher won the “Best Actress” Oscar for her role in MOONSTRUCK.
Having it reappear in a currently running commercial has reminded me that “I Got You Babe” is a pretty catchy song. And that’s the only positive thing I can say about Cher.
Michael, Cher had a lot of drama in her Life. This musical captures much of it. Plus, “I Got You Babe” gets sung a couple of times!
What Deb said. “If I Could Turn Back Time” makes me want to drive 15 inch spikes into my ears.
I give her credit for making the most of a very, very narrow singing range. But I have no sympathy for anyone who “blows through” millions of dollars the way they did, plus Sonny’s politics were despicable.
She should have done more acting after MOONSTRUCK. Zero chance I will see this.
Jeff, Cher was just 16-years-old when she met up with Sonny Bono (he was 28). Youth could have been a factor in going broke the first time. The second time, Sonny robbed Cher with a terrible contract.
I Got You Babe has always been one of my favourite songs, second would be love is strange.
Wolf, “I Got You Babe” shows up in U.S. TV commercials from time to time. It’s a very likable song.
And, of course, it was the song used to punctuate every new (same) day in GROUNDHOG DAY.
Jeff, exactly! “I Got You Babe” has burrowed itself into America’s consciousness!
Re US movies:
Of course there are quite a lot of them on Hungarian tv. My wife watches some, but she’s very critical – always reminds me of Bruce Springsteen’s:
57 channels and nothing on …
For me the problem is that practically all movies are translated into Hungarian and sound strange to me. 🙂
PS and totally OT:
Game of Thrones has ended on tv – how did you see the last installment?
My wife is already waiting for the translation into Hungarian, she’s a big fan of GRRM.
Si she would be very angry if I told her any spoilers! 🙂
Wolf, no GAME OF THRONES spoilers here. I have the series on Blu-ray, but I haven’t gotten around to watching them. I have read George R. R. Martin’s books, but the books and the TV series don’t match up on a number of plot points.
