THE ELDER ICE By David Hambling

I’d like to thank https://marzaat.wordpress.com/ for recommending this book. The Elder Ice is a 74-page tale of what Ernest Shackleton really found on his Antarctic explorations is narrated by ex-boxer Harry Stubbs. Stubbs works for a legal firm and finds himself involved in the famous polar explorer’s legacy which is full of Lovecraftian secrets. David Hambling has really done his homework on Shackleton. I learned a lot about Antarctic exploration with a Mythos twist. I enjoyed this unusual story and I’m eager to read more of David Hambling’s work! GRADE: A-

Don’t know him, but looks interesting, especially the collection THE DULWICH HORROR. I can hear Rick groaning already!

Jeff, what makes THE ELDER ICE stand above most of the Lovecraft pastiches is Hambling’s attention to detail. I have Hambling’s other books on order.

    So glad you liked it!
…and I do hope you enjoy the sequel, which has a curious connection to Conan Doyle not mentioned in the story.

PS The fourth Harry Stubbs adventure, Master of Chaos, was published last month.

David, I’m a big fan of Lovecraft pastiches. Creating a character like Harry Stubbs to narrate these adventures was a bold move! I’m looking forward to reading that Sherlock Holmes-Lovecraft mashup! I’ll order MASTER OF CHAOS (a Trump memoir?) today!

Thank you – not a mashup, but there is a connection. Stubbs would love to be Holmes, but he’s only just about Watson…

((There’s also a story in the Dulwich Horror & Others called The Norwood Builder, echoing The Adventure of the Norwood Builder, which you might like. Or not!))

David, last week was SHERLOCK HOLMES WEEK on this blog. I reviewed a couple of Holmes-Lovecraft mashups (the publishing industry seems to put one out each month!). I’ll be reading all of your books in the months ahead! Keep up the Good Work!

Todd, I knew that Stubbs-Clement connection, but didn’t make the connection to David Hambling’s work until you mentioned it!

We’re having our gutters replaced today. It’s 39 degrees and raining. I don’t envy those guys. The gutters we have now are original to the house (1996), we’re getting Leaf Guard, since we have a lot of trees including many conifers.

Rick, we had new gutters installed when we got our new roof a few years ago. But, I’m considering a variation of Leaf Guard. I’m way past the age of getting on a ladder to clean the gutters.
