UNDER THE DOME, SEASON TWO FINALE; GOTHAM, SEASON ONE PREMIERE

Diane and I almost quit watching Under the Dome, Season Two several times this summer. A dead woman resurrected, characters leaving the dome…and coming back under the dome, and some crazy weather conditions are just some of the weird plot twists that had us throwing up our hands in disbelief. We’ll be watching tonight, but if Under the Dome is renewed for a third season, we won’t be watching.

Already, the 2014 TV season is shaping up to be a disaster. The only program I’m eager to see is tonight’s Gotham, a prequel to the Batman series. I think this is a high risk/high reward gamble by FOX. If the program fails to deliver for the ardent fans, it will crash and burn quick. What new programs are you watching?

Gave up on Under the Dome early in the second season. Gotham has possibilities. Nothing else new has caught my interest. Was very disappointed in Legends as I liked the novel its based on.

From what I hear GOTHAM has produced a great pilot but now allowed critics to be subsequent episodes, which has me worried. GRACE POINT may be good if only a remake of BROAD CHURCH>.

We quit UNDER THE DOME in season 1.

There were several good things on this summer. The worst, however, at least of the ones I had the misfortune to see, was EXTANT with Halle Berry. Just horrible. I didn’t make it through one episode but Jackie watched it to the end, even though every week she kept telling me how stupid it was. But then, she also watched the new DALLAS.

New season? I’m sure there are many shows we will try, mainly because Jackie wants to see them. We did watch the first RED BAND SOCIETY, which was better than I expected. However, I wonder where it will go from there. Watched MADAM SECRETARY last night and again, better than I expected, if no WEST WING. Tonight is GOTHAM (one that Jackie is not interested in) and the awful-sounding FOREVER (which she is). I know she’ll be watching the new Shonda Rhimes show with Viola Davis too. I’m more interested in the returning PERSON OF INTEREST.

GOOD WIFE was not good last night, by the way.

Jeff, THE GOOD WIFE is Diane’s favorite TV program. I won’t tell her last night’s episode was not good. Katie DVRed it for us. While THE GOOD WIFE was on, we were landing at the Buffalo Airport.

I refuse to watch UNDER THE DOME. I quit during the first season when a cable outage coupled with the snit fit between TimeWarner and CBS caused us not to get CBS for a few weeks(no OnDemand or website links either). When they decided to make it an ongoing series, they lost me.

I’ll probably check out as many of the new shows as I can, quickly weeding out most of them. GOTHAM looks the most interesting.

Randy, we came close to quitting UNDER THE DOME last summer and then again this summer. The plot keeps getting weirder (and not in a GOOD way).

Jeff, LEGENDS was supposed to have elements of 24. There’s potential with Sean Bean, but I think much of the audience is slipping away because of the “identity” subplot.

SCORPION looked to hold promise, but has already been panned by the local “critic”. Sometimes the critics seem to just pan everything. Barbara will continue to watch BLACKLIST and GRIM, I’ll watch AMAZING RACE and sports, including some post-season baseball, though I don’t watch during the season.

Rick, Diane watches THE GOOD WIFE, I watch AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., LEGENDS & THE BRIDGE, and DOCTOR WHO. And, bits and pieces of sports (I rarely watch a whole game).

There’s a new small claims court show, Hotbench or something like that. The twist is there’s a panel of three judges instead of one. It comes on against Judge Judy and it’s produced by Judge Judy. I wonder if she knows that.

As for nighttime TV, nothing. I find modern directing and editing enervating.

My media viewing habits, in line with the trend of my generation, are centered online, so I am largely unaware of what programs are on TV (although, your suggestion of Gotham sounds interesting!). My brother and grandma have been recommending The Roosevelts on PBS, so I am hoping to eventually check that out. On YouTube, I have been watching PBS Idea Channel, VlogBrothers, Crash Course, VSauce, PBS Art Assignment, and JapanChannelDCom.

I was going to (eventually) tell you in person, but since I am not sure when I will have time to visit ECC, I guess that I will mention here that I am back in college for grad school. I am studying sociology at UB. Yes, I am aware that I am not going to make much money with a degree in that major, but I am not too worried about that because I am funded and have a teaching assistantship, so at least I should not have to go into debt to obtain a M.A. Anyway, I should probably stop procrastinating by reading your blog and get back to grading papers (I still have about 30 essays (each around 2 pages) to grade by tomorrow).

Lauren, follow you interests. It’s much better to pursue a career in sociology where you’ll be happy than a career in Accounting where you’d be miserable. We’ve DVRed THE ROOSEVELTS. I’m about to give the first round of exams of the Fall semester (remember them?). Good luck!

Thank you, Dr. Kelley! I still remember getting back the first test that I took in your class. I had never encountered grading on a curve (or as you refereed to it, giving “bonus points”), so I raised my hand to tell you that my score of 100% was inaccurate.

We watched the first SCORPION because Jackie wanted to see it and I thought it was stupid. Katharine McPhee was surprisingly good but the rest was incoherent nonsense meant for a much younger (and less demanding of logic or believability, perhaps?) generation than mine.

The worst part was the “Based on a True Story” thing at the beginning, to which one can only say, “Really? Which part? When they flew the passenger jet with 240 on board eight feet about the ground and the co-pilot climbed down into the wheel well to hand McPhee – in a sports car going 200 mph – a cord to download something?”
