VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS in 3-D

Luc Bresson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a mess. But, it’s really really stunningly good looking mess. Based on a French SF graphic-novel series, Valerain (Dane DeHaan) and his partner Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are federal agents assigned to protecting Commander Arun Filitt (Clive Owen) from an alien band of kidnappers. The movie drags in spots, but when Rihanna shows up with her pimp, Ethan Hawke, things really blow up (literally). Silly, but fun to watch. GRADE: C+

Been hearing bad things about this. There may be a sequel coming since this has made its money back overseas. Can’t stand Rihanna so that’s not a selling point. Went to see Dunkirk today . Your review was right on. Went out of way to see it in 70mm but the film broke during the previews. So after 45 minutes they let us into a IMAX showing. Should have gone to the Big Sick instead. A friend loved it and he is not easily pleased.

When it comes to HBO or Starz I’ll see it for the special effects, make up and costumes.

Speaking of make up, does anyone else watch Face Off on SYFY? I love that show and am constantly amazed at the skill and techniques. The host is Mackenzie Westmore, of the Hollywood make up artist dynasty. Since watching the show, I look in credits and many times Perc Westmore is listed. Her father is Micheal who also has worked, and I seem to remember a Bud Westmore.

Maggie, the Westmore family has been prominent in Hollywood makeup design for generations, literally.

Wow, I don’t recall ever hearing about George. I don’t think MacKenzie has ever done makeup, but she hosts the program and her dad, Michael, is mentor.

Judges include Vee Neil, who I think is so nice (she did Mrs. Doubtfire IIRC).

GIRL”S NIGHT OUT was completely generic. I liked the women but the plot was so predictable. Don’t waste your money on it.
