WHITE NIGHT By Jim Butcher

The 9th book in the Harry Dresden series features Dresden in a desperate quest to clear his vampire brother, Thomas, from a cunning plot by powerful Magical Interests.

Harry Dresden, professional Wizard and Private Investigator for the City of Chicago, grew up an orphan. His upbringing included a lot of physical and mental abuse which explains his taciturn disposition. But, as we Harry Dresden fans all know, Harry has a heart of gold under his gruff exterior. So when Harry’s brother, Thomas, is in Big Trouble, Harry throws caution to the winds to save him.

In addition, Harry takes on a mentorship role of Molly, a teenager who dabbled in Black Magic. Harry accepts his role despite the provision that if Molly ever resorts to Black Magic again, she–and he–will be executed by the White Council of Wizards.

There’s a lot going on in White Nights and the pages turn with rapidity. If you’re looking for escapist reading, here it is! GRADE: B+

Rick, I’m binging on the Harry Dresden series because the new book–the first in 8 years!–arrives today. I’m busy finishing reading the 15th book in the series, SKIN GAME, today so I can start PEACE TALK (#16) when it arrives later today. How do I know it will arrive at my door today? AMAZON just sent me an email saying my package is “out for delivery.”

What Rick said. I was going to say, you are reading these really fast.

Yeah, lately Amazon has gotten back to their quick delivery schedule after several weeks of longer than normal service. Jackie ordered 24 bars (don’t ask) of glycerin soap on Saturday night, and we had it by dinnertime on Sunday!

Jeff, you’re right. AMAZON deliveries had a lag of a few extra days in June. But, recently, AMAZON PRIME deliveries have been speeding up. On the other hand, I sent a Priority Birthday package to a friend in Michigan. The Postal Clerk told me it would take four days (pre-covid it would be there in two days). It took TWO WEEKS!

Patti, as a long-time AMAZON PRIME user, I expected orders to arrive in the 2-day window. But, with the coronavirus, that has changed. I’m happy if my stuff arrives in a week. With the Post Office, package and letters arrive unpredictably.

So true. We get notices that our package was delivered when it wasn’t. Then suddenly, it turns up two days later. In one case, it was two weeks late!

Jeff, on Saturday our doorbell rang and Diane answered the door. A wowan had two packages in her hand. “I just got home from church and I found these packages on my grill. They’re yours.” Diane thanked the Good Samaritan. One of the packages was a top Diane had ordered from Talbots. The other package was a prescription for me. Occasionally, some of our packages get delivered to the wrong house. And, once in a while, whatever we ordered never arrives.

    No, thanks!
I have to admit that I’m not interested in vampires etc – the real world is crazy enough!
