A QUIET PLACE

A Quiet Place starts with the words “DAY 89” flashed on the screen. A family is rummaging around in a looted pharmacy in a deserted town. They are all being very very quiet. They communicate with hand signals. It doesn’t take long before you find out why they’re being so quiet. Emily Blunt is fabulous in this movie. Her birthing scene–with an alien monster lurking in the background–is classic! I also admire the performance of Millicent Simmonds (a deaf actress) as teenage daughter, Regan, who wears a cochlear implant that provides minimal hearing. John Krasinski directs A Quiet Place and stars as the father of the embattled family surrounded by ravenous aliens who attack at the slightest sound. This is the quietest movie since The Artist. My only quibble is too much “shhhhhing” in the movie. Everyone knows the dangers of sound. GRADE: B

I enjoyed it a lot. It was very well directed and built a lot of tension. My only complaint is I wish film makers would come up with a new concept for an alien. Since Alien they have pretty much used the alien of that movie has a template. Next movie I see will probably be Beirut. Have just watched the 7th episode of season 4 of Bosch on Amazon. And am liking it a lot.

Steve, you’re right about current movie monsters. Lots of teeth! I’m way behind on BOSCH on AMAZON PRIME. I may give the reboot of LOST IN SPACE a try.

Steve, I wasn’t a big fan of LOST IN SPACE back in Sixties. It seemed silly when compared to STAR TREK. I did like the robot, though. Supposedly, this new LOST IN SPACE reboot is supposed to be “different.” I’ll give it a chance.

    meh

I know it got good reviews but we rarely go to the movies outside Florida except for the summer blockbusters and the Fall “prestige” movies these days. We’ll wait until it hits the small screen. I like Emily Blunt too.

Seeing it on a small screen should work fine. I liked it but found it too tense for my tastes. Not really a horror fan though. Admired the direction and acting.

We’re trying to catch up with stuff we missed while we were in Florida, where we didn’t have Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Acorn, let alone Showtime, Starz or Cinemax. We rotate 4 or 5 shows, then move on to the next group. Currently we’re watching:

Homeland (too on target; Jackie is enjoying this more than me)
    Occupied (Norwegian; series 2)
Strike Back (final series; dumb but watchable)
Counterpart (J. K. Simmons is great)
    Collateral (British mini-series)

We also have many others on deck: Hinterland (series 3), Inspector George Gently (final series), The Good Karma Hospital (series 2), Altered Carbon, Babylon Berlin, Ascension (Canadian), Absentia, The Indian Doctor, The Indian Detective, Bosch, among others. And we watch an episode of Midsomer Murders on Saturday nights.

    Network TV? Not so much.

Jeff, we seem to be watching more programs on Netflix and HULU and AMAZON PRIME. The only program I watch on ABC is AGENTS OF SHIELD. Only sports (hockey right now) on NBC. Diane watches INSTINCT on CBS.

So glad the White House JERK has tossed us into war for his ego satisfaction. I didn’t vote for the racist, white supremacist bully, and I don’t want his fuc**ng missile war.

As for the movie, as always, I’ll skip.

Rick, I think the attack on Syria is just another WAG THE DOG strategy to divert attention from Stormy and all the other corruption. Our country is so screwed!
